I have 16 horses. They are my life. I have had them for 18 years now. I will get some pics of minef or ya'll to see. I also have two new arrivals. Both fillies. There names are Charm (DOB March 1, 2008) and Jewel (DOB March 6, 2008). My horses are my life. Would not trade one for the world or any amount of money.
I assumed a bunch of things and talked down to you? Don't flatter yourself. I did no such thing. Save the PMs---. You're the one making this a personal attack. Great, you saved these horses from their death earlier than what could of been coming to them. You can't do that for every said horse, not even a small percentage. Knowledge of breeding and more about horse knowledge itself can play a big part in doing so. Ignorance is not bliss. In many horses' case--it's death. I think you need to get past the "I saved these horses from their death...yadeyadeyade" and look at the big picture.
Wow! That's a lot of horses. Please show us some pics of them! I would love to see them! I love your fillies names! Charm and Jewel. Please share some photos of them when you can. I know what you mean about loving your horses so much you wouldn't trade anything for them. I feel the same way about mine!
My bf has 4 horses and I love them! They are the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen! And they are loved and I know that they are happy
i totaly agree. the foal is a palomino. unfortunatly, the owner is also a complete moron who shouldnt own horses. his other broodmare foaled just after cola and her foal slowly died. it was really weak and unhealthy, im sure if was from the mare getting really shitty care for the first like 3/4 of her labor. they have an 8 stall barn with MUD stalls. no mats, no bedding, just piss mixed with dirt. and no attached turn out. when i first started cleaning stalls there (the lady who did it is a friend and she hurt her wrist), the horses only got out when the weather was nice and when the guy felt like leading them to the paddocks. half of the horses (the ones hes bred) are so untrained that he cant lead them w/o a halter chain. anyway, after threatening to quit and telling the guy exactly what i though of him, i managed to get it so the horses got out every day and were only brought in at night. i ended up doing most of the turn out myself though. i worked with the babies too and got it so i could lead them no problem, but im sure its all back to the way it was by now, cause i quit right after the foals were born. no one that fucking stupid and irrisponsible should be reproducing horses. those horses are worthless and will never have good lives. theres another thing owners should never do: breed horses when they dont know shit about them. like these horses have great bloodlines and are beautiful, but theyre just status symbols to him.
I'm so sad to hear about the young foal dieing. A few years back I was breaking a horse for a man that didn't know shit about training horses (yet he had quite a few). He was very nice, polite and softspoken... But he was as dumb as dumb could be when it came to horses. I don't even know why the man had horses. Anyway to get to the point, he had a mare that foaled while I was there and that foal just layed on the ground. Never once tried to get up. We did all we could for her, but she just layed there and died. It was very upsetting for me to watch it happen. Turns out the man had bred the mare to her full-brother. He also stated that he bred her before to the brother and the foal died exactly the same way.. I was in utter shock. Why in the world would you do that, honestly? I don't understand why people have horses if they don't bother to train them or be involved with them. The moron man I got the Tennessee Walker/American Saddlebred filly from had dozens of other horses that he literally did NOTHING with. They all stayed out in a huge pasture.. They were never ridden, handled, worked with.. Nothing.. The mares were bred by the stud he had in with them every year...and they all had foals, every year. He did nothing with the foals.. Never once went out to give them any sort of interaction. They were just a wild bunch of horses. Very fucking pathetic. People like that make me so angry.
Just a gentle reminder for everyone to please take a deep breath and relax. There are posts from more than just one person in this thread that are aggressive or combative (and being overly defensive is no different). Yes, some things could have been said differently or not said at all. That goes for all involved. This thread has some good information in it on both sides, despite that it was delivered in a way that was understandably taken negatively. So I ask that in the spirit of keeping this thread open, that you relax, let go of the offense and defense, try to word your thoughts a little more carefully, basically reboot and start over and get back to pictures and happy communication about the horse world. Thanks.
I could hold myself up on a pony before I could walk.... I have three geldings and two mares: "Horse" 26 year old Off the Track TB gelding "Moxie" 6 year old Appendix gelding "Tseratez" 15 year old Arabian gelding "Silver Ladee" 22 year old Arabian mare "Vanessence" 32 year old Anglo Arabian mare I admit that I didn't read through all the posts on here...I smelled the inflammatory posts...and I won't get involved...if I wanted to do battle online with other horsey people I would visit the Chronicle of the Horse or one of those other forums : )
I think that everyone has a point, you shouldn't breed horses with bad confirmation, it makes it much harder to find them homes. On the other hand we love all of them which is good too. All and all the only thing that is important is that the horses are safe and cared for. I have 3 horses, a Full Arab who's 28, and a paint whos 6, and a german warmblood whos 4.
*giggles* Horse people can be so stuck up sometimes... and I'm honestly not targeting that at anyone on here in particular, I just find it amusing. I was raised around horses, and most of the members of my extended family on my dad's side were in some sort of horse business (shoeing, showing, etc...). They were just sort of simple country people, though. I have a 17 year old mutt of a horse named Diamond. She's absolutely wild (good to ride, good temperment, just a free spirited horse) and came to us with her mother, Misty Midnight (or Mist, as we call her), an ex-show horse Tennessee Walker. I did a lot of Junior Showing things when I was little, but I sort of drifted from it and just ride for fun now. All my pictures of my horses are old, and I'd hate to take any new ones of Misty to put on here, as she's very very old and swaybacked and I can just see it now... placeboaddikt is a horse abuser who starves her poor horse.
y'know, I couldn't agree with you more. there's always those snobby horse riders with the fancy clothes that don't have respect for the horses comfort while riding them [ie. constantly pulling on their mouths] ...I've never seen it in western riding, cause that's just casual. English just seems to uptight... which is why I wanna switch to western. I've been riding english since I was 5 [I'm 15] I was in a lesson the other week, and this horse was so speedy and uptight that I had to keep slowing him down... He took off, and I had to pull back very hard, I felt so bad from him. but there are definatley nice casual people that ride... There's just a snobby farm here and there. I rode at a snobby farm... we had to lean foward, arch our back, and keep a short rein. ugh. anyways. so yeah, I've been riding for a long time, but I've kind of stopped, because my lessons always end in me being freaked out, cause the horse did this or that. I don't know, I've had horses randomly bolt off on me, or randomly start bucking... and it just seems like all the horses I ride are completely capable of that, none of them are just calm... which is why I can't wait to get a horse, I can finally bond with and ride a horse that I feel comfortable with. but yeah, I love horses. I love all animals, but horses are just awesome. my favorite animal
Man I have to disagree with you on that one, it could be Canada but like 90% of the western riders here make me fucking sick with the shit they pass off as bits. Half the reason the western horses are calm is because they have a parking break in there mouth. I however ride english and can stop my horses by slightly leaning back in my seat.....no reins needed. It depends on where you go to learn, not all english riders are snobs, not all western riders are gentle, some people have natural skill.
really? hm, I've only ridden western a few times so I don't know much. whats a parking break? It also really depends on the horse. I mean, the horse I was riding, theres almost no way to just stop them by sitting back. oh, I totally know they aren't it just pisses me off how there are some barns with the really fancy people that don't love their horses, they try to dominate them, and everything has to be perfect. [western riders are just as prone to being harsh, though.] when I get a horse, I'm just getting a bareback pad, and either a bitless bridle, or one with a nice bit... I like the calm and steady horses much better, so thats probably all I need to use.
I use the term parking break for some western bits, that cause a huge amount of pain for them. Becareful with bitless bridals, many people use hackamoores as bitless bridals, but they are actually much harsher. I use rubber coated bits.
aww, poor things... I hate that. yeah, I meant either hackamores or the rubber coated ones. I mean, there was this GREAT horse that used to be at this farm we ride at, he was very obedient, but he had alot of energy, but he was never a horse to miss a jump or all of a sudeen bolt off or be incredibly hard to stop... he was a little flabby, too, so he was comfy. We tried a hackamore with him... and he seemed just more happy. He was still the way he acted before, but I guess there was less pressure on him. and I tried a halter+leadrope bridle on another horse with a bit... he acted the exact same.
I still feel like I'm not ready for a horse... every time I read ahorse magazine, there's always a new diease or fungus or infection that I learn about, and I'm just afraid my horse would often get these. any tips? I guess just keeping their areas clean and the food and water clean is pretty much all I need to do. and how much does it cost to own a horse [...per month?] like to keep it in a stable and pasture, and have a hay/grain [and grass,of course] diet? and has anyone not used shoes on their horses [by using the barefoot/natural method]
I don't use shoes on my horses, it all depends on how much you ride them, and what kind of surface you ride them on.
I agree with sarahrei that shoes are only necessary if required by the amount of riding you are doing and protecting their feet as a consequence. I have always kept shoes on my 32 year old Quarterhorse (Miss Gold Sky) front paws and only due to her needing them to feel better trotting around her three acre pasture, yet even with shoes on her feet, I only walk with her on a lead with my dogs on trails and would never consider riding on her back. I rescued her at 28 years old when her owner and a former friend left for Alaska, to work on the oil pipeline and told me he was going to send her to a dog food factory. She is a very good horse or should I say a very big dog with hard paws...
