I can't tell based on reading most of the recent threads.

I sure would love to meet some gay hippies. Asheville is too filled up with straight hippies and abercrombie-wannabe gay bois, that apparently there isn't room for queer hippies here. Sad.

    Peace,
    Ryvr

    Cool, hi Slushie.

Dunno ... I'm wondering why it is a hard to find combination.

I guess it seems to have some causes related to both communities.

It seems like many gay people feel too strange already because of their gayness that they just try to fit in with the other gay people and end up creating a mainstream sub-culture of their own that has little room for diversity ... and I'm not quite sure but it seems like some hippies are a little more uncomfortable with gay people than some other cultures are, possibly owing in part to an overt shallowness among many of the most visible gay people.

    Peace,
    Ryvr

I'd say it's probably an isue of numbers. Let's say the odds of being gay are 1%; out every hundred people, one is gay. Now let's say that the odds of being a hippy are also one in a hundred. Concentrations are going to vary widely, of course, so I'm just ballparking these numbers. Now, basic statistics tells us that the odds of (we'll assume) unrelated events occurring simultaneously is the product of the probabilities of those events seperately. Thus, the odds of being a gay hippy are 1 in 10,000. Asheville has a population of about 73,000, so by our estimates there should be roughly between 7 or eight gay hippies in your town.

Good proposition Osedex. I thought hippies would be cool with gay people. Aren't hippies supposed to be tolerant and all that? Well, im definately not a shallow-type of gay guy that you mentioned. I am just a hippy... who likes men. I wish it were easy to find someone else who is the same, but its hard finding BOTH of these lifestyles sometimes

C'mon, you're gay, you should learn not to stereotype.

If hippies do exist now a days, they aren't exactly like that. In my POV atleast, its more of your philosiphies/beliefs that make you a "hippy".

True, but that's only if it is purely random. But (arguably) hippie-ism is a choice a person makes in their life. If it were purely down to the odds, there's be a lot more gay footballers (1% would mean at least one gay guy for every 7-8 teams including reserves), but that's only if every type of person is equally likely to become a football player as another. Much as we'd like to pretend otherwise, certain jobs and lifestyle do seem to be more attractive to gay or straight people.

I can imagine that, given the amount of pressure there is on gays to fall into a particular way of dressing and acting, coupled with the "need" that is felt to look or act gay in order to attract a mate, you'll find a lot of gay people more likely to conform to a stereotype, rather than leave people in doubt as to whether they're gay and risk them moving on to someone more obvious. Not that everyone thinks with their dicks all the time, but cmon, we're men, we'd be fooling ourselves if we denied that we ever did. ;)

There are quite a few queer anarchists around Asheville but I haven't run into any hippies while I've spent time in the city. But then again, I'm not a hippie so naturally I wouldn't gravitate to that "sub-culture".

I'm surprised there isn't a larger crowd. Have you looked into radical faeries? There is a radical faerie intentional community somewhere near Asheville in Tennessee maybe worth looking into.
