my hair is about 1.5" right now. im washing it with tea-tree shampoo twice a week (starting 2 days ago) rubbing it on my head, trying to get natural dreads really. my question is, can i continue growing out natural dreads for a few months, and if i dont like the look, somehow "undo" them and go with backcombing? i know this isnt normal but im liking the look of the backcombed dreads, i just want to try natural and see how it goes. thanks.
Hey, i'm kind of a newb too but i'm fairly sure you could do that easily, however what might happen is all of your natural progress might get destroyed once u back-comb them cause you'll rip the knots, thats why people say not to re-back-comb either. So if your willing to start from scratch in a few month then yes.
i know but even tho there starting to dread they wont be the same as back combed. i know that i would have to start from scratch but idk
I'm thinking that once you see your hair in a few months, you probably will want to take them out since you like the backcombed look. Natural dreads can certainly look like backcombed dreads, but it can take quite a while. It really depends on how patient you are. I prefer natural dreads but I understand why some people are more drawn to backcombed dreads (they tend to look neater, faster). I have had dreads for a while and then took them out, but it was not months, more like a week or so. I did backcomb those that I took out. It was very time consuming (9 hours for 52 dreads) but it was done.
thank you hemp mama. well i guess my question is, in about 4 months, when the natural dreads are starting, can i comb them out and back comb them? or will the hair be to knotty. i have a friend with dreads, she offered to backcomb and i offered 100 bucks. is that a fair price?
Well seeing as how it'll probably take a good 8 hours at least, i'd say its fair, since its preaty mindless repetative work.
I never used wax in my dreads (they were super afraid of wax...oh yes). But yeah, when I took my dreads out, the hair was more like very dry and frizzy (I would think that would make it much easier to backcomb). $100 isn't too bad if your hair isn't too long. My hair was well past my shoulders and therefore I would have to pay something a little bit more. Maybe $30 an hour is fair because really, it's very time consuming and hard on the person backcombing (that's just my opinion, of course). I also found that backcombing made my head more tender than just letting it dread. (I've had backcombed dreads that I took out, waited a while and let my hair dread naturally...I ended up taking both sets out because of the hubby...)
