I don't know what this is! I have this horrible shooting pain in the under side of my breast and there's a white spot on my nipple which seems to hurt the most! I was thinking that it may be a plugged duct on it's way to being mastitis, but why the white spot??? It also hurts like bloody hell when Xavier latches on to that side, it makes my eyes water!
    Any ideas at all???

How long has it been like that? Don't let it go too long without getting it looked at.

Have you tried warm compresses or a shower to unclog the duct? When that happened to me I would take a hot shower and massage the area.

Another thought...does the baby have any white spots in his mouth? You could have thrush, which is a yeast infection. I got that with my first one.

i'd say go to the doctor if your symptoms don't improve or even call up a LLL leader.... hopefully your doctor will be more helpful than mine was when I went in with either a very mild case of mastitis or a very severe plugged duct.... he had no clue what i was really talking about and then asked me if there was any other way to feed my child as in formula.... i told him this was the only way, and walked out of there quite angry with the medical system... Porter eventually helped me heal by continuing to nurse on the side with the plugged duct.....

so no matter what... keep nursing, even through the pain.... Xaxier is going to help you unplug the duct and help heal you... do you have a copy of "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding?" that book saved me and had lots of tips on what to do when you have a plugged duct or feel like you might have mastitis....

thanks everyone. I have been nursing xavier a lot on that side, but I also don't want to favour it since the more it's emptied, the more it's going to fill up :S
No, I don't have the book, I really should get it! I know it's supposed to be awesome.
I do plan on going into the doctor, but as per canada's health care system, it's going to take about 2 weeks to get in. In the mean time, I'm just nursing lots and massaging lots.

oh, and thrush also crossed my mind, but xavier doesn't have the white tounge, so I didn't think that was it.
thankfully I have a female family doctor who delivers babies and works with the midwives who I had xavier with, so she's fimiliar with everything (thank god!!!)

Hope you're feeling better. I just wanted to throw in that cabbage leaves do wonders for mastitis. Don't ask me how it works, it just does. I'd refrigerate the cabbage and then plaster the leaves all over where it was hurting. The cold leaves always made it feel so much better. They would absorb the heat of the infection and get wilty which is when I'd get a new leaf. I'd just walk around with cabbage leaves in my bra until it went away and it always did.

I just crack up every time I suggest something weird like this. All of my friends call me when there is something wrong with them and I give them one of my weirdie home remedies. They'll make fun of me but try it anyway and then they call later and tell me it worked. But I do take a lot of razzing for it... lol

lol, I dont' think you're weird, I've actually done that before haha
I still don't really know what's up with this. Now I have discovered that there is a fairly large bump on the underside of my nipple, right around where the white spot is. It's bizzar!!!!!!!!

oh, hey, is that bump inside the section your kiddo latches onto, or on the edge?
ask the doc about a cyst, an epidermal or sebaceous cyst.
I recently started getting them. they are not that much of a deal, unless they hurt.
    then they truly suck.

It's on the actual nipple, so it is a part where he latches on. It hurts the worst when he latches on or when I take off my bra...then it's really really painful. Sometimes just at random times throughout the day it'll start to throb. It's very annoying. DH's health insurance plan at work is changing over right now, too, soI don't have any coverage and can't afford the perscription. Here comes the cabbage......
