HENDRIX !! Not only the best skillwise, but he invented most of the techniques himself.

I think Slash or Angus Young would smoke Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page skillwise (both sloppy players), but they did do more for the genre and influenced more people. But if that what it takes to be the greatest guitarist, then it would be Lennon or Harrison. Purely fretboarrd skillwise, it would probably be Steve Vai, but the guy's writing is a little lacking. So then, should we judge based on the most well rounded?... well then that would be me! hahaha

Both of those are mediocre guitar players skill wise, there are much better examples of more technically skilled players.

I prefer a sloppy player who plays with creativity and soul. I don't doubt there are dozens of guitarists who could cream Jimmy Page technically (although he was a fantastic session player back in the day), but how many of them make you want to sing along with the solo like he does? Technical masters do nothing for me.

    Hendrix. No contest.

David Gilmour definitely second, and a very different style, of course.

Jimi Hendrix is obviously the best. Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane) is pretty good too.

Jimi is number one, then Clapton for sure (arguably both number 1).
