Hey, you all know more about gardening than I do, so I'm going to ask for your advice... I want to have come plants, what I would like is a few herbs or anything I can grow in pots in my bedroom that I can put into my tea! (i would love to crow chocolate mint or something) and maybe a nice hardy plant for foliage that's similar to a peace plant or a zebra plant? The room only had one window but it's a big window and the room still gets lots of light! and i have time to take care of them and LOVE to have things to nurture and take care of... especially when it's rewarding (in livening up my room and possibly having things i can have for tea that i grew myself ) thanks sooo much it'll make me really happy to have some life in the room. peaceeace: -Alison Oh! and do herbs grow year-round if they're indoors? AND can you snip off a piece of a mint plant/bush and make a new one out of it or do you need seeds? sorry, i'm just full of questions <3
Find someone with mint in their yard, and I'm sure they'd be all to happy to give you some cuttings. It's insanely invasive! For tea, if you're not allergic there's chamomile with its pretty daisy-like flowers. Then there's mint & chocolate mint. (a personal favorite for its smell, but tastes like regular mint) Lemonbalm is another favorite here, and it sounds odd. but lavender also makes a really nice tea. It can get pretty tall though, so I guess that would depend on your window. Oh, another favorite my daughter discovered was violet tea. It's actually QUITE good as a lighter, "bedtime" type tea. My mom grew a few stevia plants this year to sweeten her own tea with, and says it tastes much better than the prepared stuff. Personally I think it tastes awful, but it's another container-sized plant you could try. I have heard that herbs can grow year-round indoors, but haven't actually tried it yet. I would imagine that with regular watering & trimming and a good sunny window it ought to be just fine. Good luck! love, mom
Thanks so much! I know for sure that i'll be getting some mint trimmings from by boyfriend's father's plant, which i know was very healthy the last time i saw it. i LOVE chamomile tea it's my fav, but i'm a little aprehensive of growing some because i think i read somewhere it can grow to be quite tall... i may look into it though. if i can find some chocolate mint i'll definitely grow that too and perhaps lavender... i'm just glad i have some suggestions from a real person and not some website i'm not sure about... Thanks again Mama! -Alisoneace:
You can easily root mint cuttings by placing them in a glass of water and changing the water about every other day. Kentia palms are pretty forgivng and great for adding ambience to a room, but don't put it in a dark corner. Basil and rosemary are herbs I am rarely without. I don't put them in tea but I do use them in salads.
