I'm sure you've all heard about the fighting between Russia and Georgia over Ossetia. In my opinion this is merely aggression by Moscow. Thoughts?

I'm also a little concerned about the lack of coverage this is receiving from American news agencies. It's disgusting to see more time given to the trivial affair of John Edwards when there is an escalating crisis overseas potentially leading to a major war. They're on completely different levels, and the Edwards story is just political character assassination. Just another example of why I can't take cable news seriously.

Yes, you are very much correct about the lack of coverage on the televised media. There is a good reason for this, and I am sure we are going to be hearing much, much more about this in the coming days and weeks. This is BIG!

In the meantime, here are some IMPORTANT articles everyone needs to look at, showing evidence of U.S. military presence in Georgia.

US runs military exercise around Georgia conflict

    Now Public
    July 17, 2008

The conflict in the Caucasus country of Georgia is growing to alarming levels. The country is fighting with a break-away region in teh North called Abkhazia, where an ethnic minority lives. The area is currently de-facto independent, and Russia is backing the area’s claims to independence, although it’s not really clear why. The US secretary of state Condoleeza Rice visited the country earlier this month, and now the US military is running exercises around the conflict. Could the US military be planning to get involved in this Caucasus conflict? The US would be supporting its pro-West ally Georgia, while Russia would be supporting the rebels. Not exactly a good idea geopolitically!

Green Berets now in Georgia: U.S. Special Forces are training Georgian soldiers to fight radical Muslims. The mission could benefit other U.S. interests as well

VFW Magazine, June-July, 2002 by Tim Dyhouse

President George Bush called the May deployment of some 150 U.S. advisers to Georgia the latest front in the U.S. war on terrorism. Much like their fellow soldiers in the Philippines, U.S. Special Forces are teaching Georgian soldiers how to better fight Muslim extremists within their country. Also, as in the Philippines, U.S. troops are not permitted to engage in combat.

During this time approximately 2,600 Georgian soldiers, including a headquarters staff element and 5 tactical units, received training. Another assistance program, the Georgia Security and Stability Operations Program (Georgia SSOP), was launched in January 2005 as a continuation of the (GTEP) of 2002-2004. February 26, 2002

For a third day high-placed Russian and Georgian politicians have been pronouncing loaded phrases, in the deparaging sense, which are not acceptable in diplomatic protocal. In reply to the suggestion of Igor Ivanov that bin Laden might be hiding in the Pankisi gorge, a more than insulting answer followed from President Eduard Shevardnadze, with the proposal to seek out the terrorist in Ivanov’s mother’s house. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov and Georgian Security Minister Valery Khaburdzania quickly jumped into the frey, while the barbs of the Georgian side continued to carry a very offensive tone.

You people think this is funny?...

I think it's sad that in the XXI century, era of progress, there are still these primitive ways of solving world's problems such as wars who are mostly used as an excuse for pathetic ball-less men to do something extraordinary with their lives because they can't find any other way...

rat you left out the one where israeli "military advisers" are supposedly embedded with the georgian troops that assaulted south ossetia..

theres a link to it in the thread i started in this forum on this a few hours before this one was started..

seems like this is all over oil once again.. isreal wants a pipeline from there. the offered to let russia in and russia brushed them off so they are coaxing georgia into this in hopes that if georgia gets control of south ossetia that they can have there pipeline...

i guess no one responded in my thread because im just a alarmist?? id say its something to be alarmed about..

The situation in Georgia demonstrates the folly of extending NATO into traditional Russian spheres of influence. Should we fight a war with Russia over Georgia? I don't think so. I think we have too much trouble with the two wars we are already fighting.

My parents once told me when I was really young, that if the US and Russia are at war, it's gonna be WW3. I think it could be possible, that Russia is using the momentum to enlarge it's territories and maybe make it to the mediterranean sea, like it has been trying for centuries. But when the UN and the US intervene, it's major shit.

Why does the US care about Georgia? Simple, a big oil pipeline goes through there that lets Western Europe get oil without passing through Russia or Iran. And I'm no fan of Russia, but Georgia did start the war. And they've devastated South Ossetia's capital. There's almost 2000 dead!

Why are people comparing this to the John Edward's coverage? Of course the John Edwards thing is going to get more coverage than what's happening between Russia and Georgia. He did have this affair while running for president.

Good work getting all of that together Pressed Rat. Interesting move, that they chose to invade/respond on the opening day of the Olympics.

And if Russia gains control of the territory, they'll have the economy of every country in Western Europe in their hands, if that is true.
