If you are an American citizen, what political party do you prefer? Please explain why, if you want to.

I am a Democrat because I believe the government has an important role to play in society. I often agree more with the Greens, but nothing to the left of the Democrat Party can be elected in the United States. Unfortunately, the United States is a right wing country. Most Americans like cars, guns, and rich people, and dislike the government. :(

I don't support any political party. I am an individualist.

You think most Americans dislike the government? I beg to differ.

The libs love big government as long as it promises "free" handouts and government programs that supposedly are to "help" them, while the fake conservatives love big government, as long as it promises to protect them from those "evil doers" in the Middle East. Both parties are furthering the notion that more government = more freedom and prosperity, it's just that they use different selling points. The agenda of both parties is exactly the same, as both are owned and controlled by the big banks and transnational corporations. That's why the American people can vote the Democrats into office, expecting change, only for these Democrats to roll over for the person they're supposedly against. That's why the Democrats have been supporting Bush while protecting him from impeachment, and going along with every piece of fascistic police state legislation put forward by the Republicans.

I prefer Green. But you didn't put a Socialist option. I tend to lean to the left.

Yeah, if I could vote, I'd be the same. Either Green or NDP...I don't like the way people think they're throwing their votes away with those two...I'd hate to be like the USA where you got like two parties to realistically choose from...

Anyways, yeah, green or new democratic...

Society's can do quite well inspite of the goverment. What role does George Bush play in your society?

America is too big to have to rely on public transportation.

I've never drawn a paycheck from a poor person.

    The goverment sucks in general.

Who said Socialist isn't available as a choice? It's synonymous with Democrat. I don't prefer any political party. Governments primary responsibility is the protection of the citizens, but it's got to the point that government poses the greatest threat to the citizens.

This is a government of the people and by the people. We vote for our leaders in every election. Whatever is wrong is our own damn fault.

The Republicans got us in two needless wars, tanked our reputation across the globe and crashed the world economy; and people still vote for them. Too many people are more concerned with spreading their personal morality than solving problems; and that is what our elected officials are doing.

good to see someone who believes in personal responsibility. In the end, the politicians are chosen by the people.

I go farther than that. Anyone lying in a campaign, or making any false political statements should be charged with a crime and barred from ever holding a public office. That would include the Republicans who said the public option in the original health care bill would "kill grandma."

The only way we are going to ever have any confidence in our government is to stop all of the lies.

Please, let's kill any additional government involvement in the provision of health care insurance.

The best form of government is self governance. Of course we have to resort to larger encompassing governments to control those who are incapable of controlling themselves, but we should never allow it to manipulate excessive control over those who are capable of self governance. Charity, not government, should be the source that provides for the need of the poor and needy. Too many individuals have become beholding to politicians as their providers and fail to recognize that it is other individuals who actually are providing their needs.

I happen to get my health care from the government, the V.A. system. I wouldn't trade it for your private sector piece of crap insurance for anything.

Your paragraph above tells me that you know nothing about government, health care, or charity. If you were to tell seniors that their Medicare was to be turned over to insurance companies you woud be burned at the stake.

Did you see me say anything about eliminating the V.A. system or Medicare? Although both of them cost us quite a lot, those who are covered by them have earned them based on the laws already in effect. As such they should be maintained. The new government proposed Health care plan just creates a way of providing greater coverage, for those who currently freely partake of the system, while increasing the cost of those who already pay for it. It will not decrease the cost to those who pay, and would diminish the services to those who could afford to pay.
Perhaps you should enlighten me and others with what you know about government, health care and charity?
I'm also a senior citizen, Viet Nam vet, and have more than a decade on you. Please try and respond to what I say, not what you "think" I said.

I was responding to what you said.

25,000 people die every year from lack of health care. Many of these had it but were canceled by the insurance companies. Charity did nothing to help them. In 2001 one of those deaths was my wife, charity did nothing to help her, but the government did, through Medicaid.

A couple of years ago I took a friend of mine to a local food bank. She had to listen to the sermon before she got the food. And this was after the government made them quit requiring people go to their church services in order to get help.

There isn't enough charity to fill the needs, and much of it comes with strings.

The V.A., Medicaid and Medicare proves the point that government run health care does work quite well. Even with private health insurance, the healthy still pay for the care of the sick. I pay car insurance, don't have accidents, therefore I pay for those who wreck their cars. This is how insurance works, whether it's run by the government or private companies who make billions in profits, that we all pay for.

During the 50 odd years that the Democrats controlled Congress, we won WWII and became the most powerful and richest nation in the world. In one decade of Republican control we lost our standing in the world and crashed the world's economy.

Our government worked quite well until the Republicans took charge, social programs and all. If you want to go back to the 1920s when government was smaller and had less "control," as you put it, you have to give up your Social Security, Medicare and V.A. benefits.

The problem with conservatives is they don't realize exactly what they will be giving up if they get their way. If it wasn't for the "big" central government in the 40s the phone recording today would say "press 1 for German, press 2 for English; "sig heil"
