Don't use conditioner and wear it back after day one. As fer smelly ..dunno...perfume of some sort?
Oh yeah...short hair takes days long to get oily..but it can lead to bed head if it's too short.

yeah, I second the no conditioner thing, if your hair is too oily that would work, and as for smelly, when I get unbearable and don't have time to wash my hair I use a mix of water and lavander oil (just enough to make the water smell good, you don't want to overdo it) in a spray bottle and spray that on till my hair is damp, let it dry and it masks the smell for a bit, but really your best bet is to try to squeeze a shower in, masking the smell can only go so far.

If you just want to hide it all together, you can try a kerchief, but in my opinion, after a long day of that, your hair smells way worse than it did to start, I guess cause the smell and oil are all trapped for the whole day.

I have locks, and my solution to musty smelling hair is rose water. They sell some good stuff in a spray bottle at your local co-op or you local health food store.. or even one of those chain health food stores if you dont have the option of going elsewhere. mwah! be well!

I'll PM you so we don't crowd this thread with off topic stuff, lol

I just read that if you put corn starch (powder) in your hair, let it sit for a few minutes... then shake/ comb it out, that is supposed to get all of the oils out, so it'll keep for hair ok for an extra day or two.
Brush your hair when you are done showering, and it's still wet (it's good to use a pick so you dont damage your hair). If possible, blow dry it. (When trying to minimize oil... air drying sometimes isn't the best idea). Use minimal products in your hair. Brush minimally. The key here is MINIMAL.
Try not to wear your hair back the first 2-3 days of not washing. Then, once it does start to get dirty, and you want to wear it in a ponytail... don't just brush it all back so there is no part. If you hair is oily, then leaving a part, and doing a loose pony tail makes it look less icky. Ok.. so say you do that on day 3-4. Then on like.. day 5 you can slick it back, put some gel in it. Maybe curl, or poof the ends. So, it looks sleek.
As for smell... I've never had smelly hair before... but try some type of body spray. Citrus would be nice. You can probably make one of your own with different essential oils mixed with water, and spray it on the ends (so not to get the roots oily)
Hah.. wow.. if this post was up last week, I totally wouldnt have answered. But I just read all this in some magazine at the doctors office.

When I wake up late or something and I cant shower before work, I work a little water and baby powder into the roots of my hair and then blow dry. It works pretty well for me......I think I got that idea out of a magazine or somthing:)

I've also read in many places that spraying your hair with salt water, or ocean water, will draw out the oils from your hair, then you just comb your hair through.

Also, avoid running your hands through your hair too much, that spreads the oils in your hair. Keep your hair out of your face, put it back with clips, or a bandanna or headband, and you shouldn't have to wash it every day. It's not healthy to wash your hair every day anyway, it tends to make your hair get even more oily sooner.

Don't put salt in your hair! It'll fall out!

talc is only meant to make it look less greasy.

Change your pillow case daily, wash your hair in the evening, only condition the ends of your hair not the scalp, keep your hands out of your hair, Use an "oily hair" shampoo, and try not to get your hair wet when you dont intend to wash it
