Neo those dudes all suck in the presesnce of Steve Howe. Objective fact, that is, by the way. Not an opinion
Steve Howe is a guitarist thats way better than all those dudes that suck in his presence... But thats cool I learned something too, it's not enough to have an opinion, you really have to ram it down someones throat and be as insulting as possible when someone likes something that you don't like. It's an invaluable lesson that I'll have to put in action from now on in this forum.
I like Kurt Cobain. I think his death caused a terrible loss. a lot of people have different opinions of him, but my personal opinion, he was a great musician-
See the thing is EVERYONE knows what it's like to live with depression, and plenty of people know what it's like to live with drug addiction, but most don't kill themselves, let alone when they just had a child. I'm gonna go with Layne Staley, he suffered the same problems and was by far a more miserable person then Kurt and such a recluse of a human, at least his death was accidental though.
Sigh...If you're going to be elitist and condescending at least back it up. But I guess you can't judging by your responses in this thread.
urt Cobain makes a poor excuse for a cultural icon. I don't mean to discount his personal pain, or anything like that. though, the cat offed himself. Since then, a lot of people have set him up as some kind of great symbol, like some cheap rock and roll Christ figure who died for our sins or something. Yuck, people. This guy was weak and suffering and did not ever seem to get any joy from his success. He was one miserable downer. Of all the musicians you could set up as your hero or idol, why this sad sack? Camille Paglia made a similar point several years ago. She contrasted Cobain as a sad little lost boy, compared to the tough MEN of the 60s rock generation - Bob Dylan, Mick and Keef, etc. It's not like Nirvana's music was all that. They only made about four albums, and none of them was a Sgt Pepper or Purple Rain. They did some good work, but it's not like it was anything to lose your mind over a decade later. I don't see anyone carrying on like this about Terence Trent D'Arby now, for example, and he's FAR more accomplished on every musical level. On the other hand, TTD didn't tragically blow his brains out to complete some requirements for legendhood. What's up with that? Does getting yourself dead somehow make you a greater artist retroactively? What's with this cheesy death cult stuff, anyway? What do people get from obsessing over these dead people? There are plenty of much more accomplished musicians who did not self-destruct you could cast as your golden calves. And why would you set your mind on Kurt Cobain when you could just as easy Call me crazy, but I'd much rather obsess over JERRY or SRV..... Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings.. fucking ELVIS.... rather than Cobain singing "I Hate Myself and Want to Die." It's a lot more fun - and a lot healthier as well. how did I duck and miss you D&M??? mmm, you forgot. A cord ,dropped D tunning E cord. Fm.. . fairies with boots on dancin' with a dwarf. Oh, right now!:cheers2:
I know I obsess over Jerry Garcia.. I have more pictures of Garcia in my home than anyone else... I dont even have pictures of my own family... Well I guess I do.... Since Garcia was/is my family...
reading through this i have found the over use of the word emo... not good on a hippy forum im a massive fan of nirvana and have been for ages, to just dismiss him as mediocre is lacking, nobody knows if he killed himself or not but talking ill of the dead ain't too great and the saying 'live and let live' comes here, theres all different groups of people on this planet and yeah sure you're not gonna like all of them, but theres no need to make an arse out of yourself by stirring them up kurt didnt start grunge ill admit that when he was a teen he started hanging out with buzz from the melvins and buzz started taking him to 'grunge' shows we're all victims of our life experiences and kurt started a band and took on that sound and made it in the industry bleach is a great record but it didnt break the bank made nevermind and everyone went apeshit over it (not my fav record but still high in my books) grunge killed the hair metal era... the glam make up turned into something a bit more real and raw.. it need to happen!
Maybe he wasn't mediocre, but he surely didn't put an end to hair metal neither. It just was something passing, just as grunge seems to be. No need to blame a new genre for that. Just trying to stop you from going over to the other side of the spectre: making him a hero I fullheartly agree with this part though:
to many people, he is a hero! not my hero, an influence, yes, but not a hero grunge pwns hair metal anyway (my opinion!!!...dont kill me)
