I'm an American living in the UK. I have heard the term 'yob' being thrown around (not to me), but what in god's name does it mean? I know it's an insult, but I'd like to know what context it's used in. Thanks
A yob is basically someone who behaves in a 'yobbish' way. Yobbish behavior is basically anti-social behavior. I generally associate yobs with chavs. I am sure someone else can give a better explanation though.
Yob is boy backwards, which perhaps suggests that it was originally a term for a 'backwards boy'. However it is a term used to describe all teenagers these days, anti-social or not
For anyone who thinks the 'chav' is a new phenomenon, we have had 'yobs' for decades, and they are basically the same thing, perhaps wearing some different clothes, listening to different music and using a few different words, as we all are... Before that we had scallywags, rascals, ne'er-do-wells, rogues... nothing changes.
rednecks are an entirely different thing in the usa. redneck boys typically say "yes ma'am, no ma'am, please and thank you" in the usa. i loves me some good rednecks. of course, every group has it's assholes.
you can. i don't wanna use british words with my nearly texas accent. it would sound EXCEEDINGLY pretentious. it'd come out soundin' like "yawb."
I know a few Americans who would say it as yahb. Thatd just be ridiculous Loads of people over here have started adopting too many American expressions and sounding like arses too though
My brothers favourite words seem to be "sick" and "immense" at the moment, apparently meaning something good
can we start a national campaign to get "ne'er-do-wells" back into common usage? perhaps scallywags too. yob just sounds too aggressive..
