I wasn't sure where to post this because it really does cover so many topics, but for the last few days I've started biking to work. It's about 11-13 miles each way depending on how I go. I find it really breaks up my mornings and evenings and doesn't take me THAT much longer than driving a car. Driving takes me about half and hour and biking takes about an hour, though I'm sure by next week I'll have it down to much less (this morning was my best time yet!). I feel great when I get to work, the exercise, fresh air, personal time, being good to the earth, etc... it's all fantastic. The only downside is there are A LOT of really serious hills sprinkled all throughout the ride. Very little of the my commute is flat. So today I'm gunna head over to the bike shop near work and see if I can re-gear or replace my mountain bike with something more suitable for commuting, since she doesn't hold her speed so well. Anyone else do this?
I have a recumbent trike that I use on short commutes. I've been off wheels for a long while so I'm getting my "pedal legs."
I was surprised at how quick the body can adapt. The first day the commute took me about an hour and a half. The next day an hour and twenty. Today, it only took me an hour and I didn't stop to rest or hoof a hill like I had in days previous.
i do occasionally, but since my work is so close, I usually walk. but good one on you! that's awesome, congrats!
I wish I could walk! But that's too far for me on foot. Do you live close enough to walk or do public transportation to most of the stuff around you?
almost everything is close enough to walk or bike to; aside from a few places that my boyfriend will drive me.
I used to bike a lot. I have to take my grandson home now, so I can't since I haven't figured out how to get both of us on the bike-lol. I'm hoping I can bike next week, when he's on break. I ride a mountain bike, too, but I know from my husband who has both that a road bike would be a lot faster. I only have about 3 miles each way, but if I had a longer commute, I'd get a faster bike. It's a great way to get outside and get healthy.
i'm stuck in the throws of winter but I'm hoping to start biking and rollerblading to class when spring finally hits, it's just so bloody cold, brrrr. kudos to you guys for doing the environment a favour, big hugs I love it when people take the step out of their comfort zone
I really wish I could, but at the moment, there are many obstacles: #1) broken bike and no money to fix #2) subzero temperatures #3) work is 10 miles away #4) I live on top of a hill and have a heart-condition Excuses, excuses, but I like being alive
nice man i loove riding bikes. i ride to school but that is no 11-13 miles....its more like 1 mile but even that just starts the day out so well. i do a lot of riding for fun too, it just gives me a lot of time to think and reflect and it just puts me in such a great mood. i also have a mountain bike and to get anywhere from my house you have to go up a lot of hills. one of those little road bikes with the skinny tires are such an amazing difference, you can seriously go up hills with ease on those but anyways keep up the good work man!
When I lived on the beach I'd get up before the crack of dawn each morning and ride my bike to the bus station to catch a bus to work. Where I lived you could stick your bike on the front of the bus so it was awesome, I could go anywhere I wanted without a car! It's a very liberating feeling to be independent from automobiles. I mean I did rely on the public transportation but that's only because my work was over 15 miles away. I loved riding my bike around town, it was amazing going over the bridges as the sun rose over the ocean, oh my god it was so beautiful. And talk about great exercise! I was in the best shape of my life! Damn the memories are making me want to fix my bike and get into it again...
Way to go! I would love to ride to school, but it takes 1 1/2 hours to get there. So public transport it is
if you can stand on your pedals. I can't. pedaling the Beast is closer to leg press machine-movements.
how old is your grandson? I'm envisioning a trailer, or one of thoose partial bikes that turn yours into a tandem for you and a kiddo. check this site out: http://www.ibike.org/education/infant.htm
Yeah they have some neat trailers for kids. I guess there are a lot of people that do this, at least according to an article I was reading recently on another forum. As for the hills, I'm not much for standing on the pedals, it's much more inefficient since your legs have to support your body and also push the bike. Just staying seated in a ow gear and truging on through is the best way to put down hills.
i ride my bike to work everyday, its not that far but i am still out there, i havnt had a license for a year, so i bought a bike and started getting around everywhere, i live in denver co and we got great public transportation.
i live about 30 minutes away from work by car.. and i happen to be in a skill trade and need personal tools, so i cant bike to work or i would.
I used to bike to work all the time. It was about an hour ride and I looked forward to it everyday. I planned my route so I would ride though the state park where I was greeted by deer and coyotes a few times a week. Yeah the hills were a bummer at first, but you get used to it. I'm doing the stay at home deal with my son right now so I don't work anymore, but I totally miss that ride.
i just got a new car this summer.. but i started biking to work agian like i did when i was 14, i live about 5 minutes away from work biking.. but i ride bmx.. mostly street, so i like to make it a 50 minute ride through town, in alleys, certain unique spots.. visit some secret spots in the woods with dirt jumps, if anyone can relate to that here thats dope. 50 minutes of riding the way i do with that bike is 3 times the excersise you get with 50 minutes on a normal bike.
Yaaaay bike-commuting! My commute is only 6 miles each way, but I love it. I don't drive my car at all now unless I'm going to hooping practice or going out of town. Love it!
