So I have this friend who has been "vegan" for almost two years. She comes to school with Vegetarian Sausage Rolls and Donuts that she buys straight from the bakery that morning, for lunch. As far as I know, this bakery does not make vegan donuts (a very close friends parent's used to own the business, she would know what is in them) and I have always assumed that vegetarian sausage rolls were brushed with egg or milk, and the pastry made with butter... hmm... Opinions?
interesting first post, and I question why you need to know this. Are YOU veg, and are YOU eating the pastries? if, so, you say you know the people with the recipes, so asking here is pointless. If, however, you are just wanting to call down this person, rethink why you want to do that. Many, many newer veg*ans miss ingredients for a while. It's a journey, not a terminus.
i did not come here to put this person down and i shouldn't be made to feel bad for being a curious/concerned friend. i am a dear friend of hers and if she wants to be vegan then i want her to do it right. i would like to know how to tell her i am concerned about this properly so i can help her to be a better vegan.
It shouldn't matter what people eat, but it is always good for people to eat healthy. When I was in high school I did the whole veg thing wrong, but I got on the right track when I got to college. Just inform her that you can get sick without the proper nutrition. Iron is in dark leafy veggies (ex, kale, spinach) and protein is in a lot of things (ex, nuts, soy). Right now I juice and drink smoothies. I add liquid probiotics to my smoothies. This provides billions of good bacteria that your body needs to properly process. It is especially a good thing for women to take probiotics. The ONLY thing that vegetarians and vegans lack in their diets is B12, which she can take daily in a pill or liquid form. I think that the reason a lot of people don't eat right is due to not knowing how and what to cook. Eating a raw food diet provides you with more nutrients.
ah. then tell her that you suspect they could have egg wash, or butter (or even lard) in the pastry. then it is all up to her.
