Haha! Seriously, I'd pay money for an album that was just her songs from the Velvet Underground debut sung by different (better) singers (as long as Antony and the Johnsons didn't show up and ruin it for me).
Flobots play Fort collins quite regular. i have a girlfriend who loves them. Personally I think girls are quite unwelcome in rock and roll or metal. I would totally welcome them and love it if it were quality. I think female musicians are hot as hell. My wife can pound out metal with the best of them if she could get the chance. Long story short. i agree with this thread but not just for symbolism sake. It has to be good quality stuff.
good thread! As a guy who is in a band fronted by a female vocalist, I can tell you that I think the reason we dont see more women players is that rock and metal musicians are too chauvinistic as a group. Its easier to be a guy who is missing limbs or fingers than it is to be a chick trying to get a gig in a band. They simply dont want the girls to play along and make it as hard as possible for them to get the experience needed to turn pro. Even having just one female in the group can lead to situations and comments that have stunned me, based entirely on gender. I never knew when I started what total a-holes guys were about chicks in bands. It has changed some recently, but they are still the exceptions rather than the rule. I think you dont see the same situations in other styles of music, classical jazz etc, because there the focus is on ability and merit rather than how well you get along with the other three or four guys in the van. So more than telling chicks to play, I think we need to be telling guys to let them sit in more! just my opinion, as always
yeah, it's the whole concept that many men will have to figure out that women aren't there just to get their dicks hard. sometimes they just wanna do something fun.
You bring up an interesting point, and I think you should start a thread about it. As for me, I like a lot of female musicians. You just have to look for them. Ednaswap is a great 90's grunge band fronted by a woman with a woman drummer. Hole was a band that had an insane lead singer and secondary guitarist, a male lead guitarist, and then a bunch of other females. The Nymphs fit into the stereotype, but the lead singer (Inger) wrote all of the material herself. I think a lot of time women tend to do more singer/songwriter than band stuff, like Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Noe Venable because they don't get their due credit in the rock world due to sexism. PS- When I form a band, I would love to have a female drummer or whatever. Drummer would be coolest, but hey, I'm open to anything. Sexism is lame as hell.
Hey everyone, it could also depend on the music you like, maybe that genre doesn't have many female musicians or vocalists. As for me, I prefer a female vocalist, and either gender on the instruments. I'll name a few bands for you to look at, some may be too heavy, but others you may like. Some are like rock opera, some switch male and female vocal duets, one band even has a female vocal and guitarist, which is called Ignitor. Look it up on "you tube", the song demonslayer. Some other stuff is Nightwish, Within Temptation, After Forever, Epica, Collide, Faith and the Muse, Enigma and Doro Pesch. They're all on You Tube I have many more, but can't remember them now. Try the one's mentioned, even if you don't like them, give all of them a try, you never know. Peace everyone, Spirit Wynd
I was playing keyboards in 3 bands with guys only (mostly they were much older guys) and I didn't mind it, nor did they....We were all equal and I didn't ask for any special treatment and we had really fun relationship....And, it's not that they wanted me to play with them just because I'm a girl, but because I'm a good keyboard player....
