"But them deputies - Did you ever see a deputy that didn't have a fat ass? An' they waggle their ass an' flop their gun aroun'. Ma,' he said, 'if it was the law they was workin' with, why, we could take it. But it ain't the law. They're a-workin' away at our spirits. They're a-tryin' to make us cringe an' crawl like a whipped bitch. They tryin' to break us. Why, Jesus Christ, Ma, they comes a time when the on'y way a fella can keep his decency is by takin' a sock at a cop." - John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath I won't pretend to have been put through anything near as bad as this poor guy, but I've dealt with the FW(Fort Wayne)PD a couple times. If somebody calls the police on your for any reason, and you're under the age of 30, your guilt is assumed. I was under this highway overpass with a couple friends when i was a freshman in high school. We were just hanging out because we thought it was a cool place. Every once in awhile we would roll rocks about the size of those you'd find in a playground down the hill beside the road and they would crash harmlessly into the wall at the bottom. Some paranoid bastard was CERTAIN we were throwing rocks at cars, so he called the police and told them just that. They came and told us to stand by the squad car, then asked why we were throwing rocks. When we denied having thrown rocks at cars in the first place he screamed somethingl ike "Don't lie to me you damn kids or I'll take you to the juvenile detention center!" so we ended up admitting to doing something we didn't do to save our own asses. He called all of our parents and had them pick us up. My mom later told me that from what she'd been told on the phone by the police station they made it out like we were throwing huge boulders over the side of the highway onto cars below. Oh, they also told our parents that "one of them tried to run. . . I'm not sure which one it was." This, of course, was complete fabrication. We were all too scared stiff to move, much less run. A couple years ago I got arrested in a woods for smoking pot. I'll never forget what the cop said - "You were honest with me so I'll be honest with you - you're going to jail." He forced us to lead the way back out of the woods in handcuffs, which was no easy task considering how much brush and trees were scattered around and how uneven the ground was. His cop buddy showed up after we were in the squad car and made some comment like "Man, look at you're eyes, you must be really baked! ahahaha!" to my friend. We were not allowed to wear seat belts, and the cop drove a steady 20 miles per hour over the speed limit the entire way back to the station. Again, my bad cop experiences don't compare to these people who get beaten or tazed for no reason at all, but it is an example of how big of assholes cops can be for no real reason other than the erections they get when they do so. Here in Fort Wayne we have the highest paid cops in the country - not in numbers, but once you take cost of living into account, our cops get paid with more buying power than any other. They only have to pay like $20 every two weeks for unlimited gas for their squad car, which they can take home and use like a regular car any time they please. The amount of crime here is pathetic compared to other cities that have fewer cops and do just fine. All our cops do is arrest huge numbers of people for DUIs and marijuana possession. When I went to court, those two made up about 95% of the crimes on the docket. There's no serious crime here, yet the city dupes its residents into dishing out ever increasing amounts of money Fort Wayne's justice system, which is nothing more than a giant money making scam.
As for the NYPD. . . thats probably more of a mixed bag. I don't live in NY so I can't say much of anything about their police with any certainty, but I'd guess there are at least some decent cops working there. And I know there is actually real crime to deal with, unlike the shitty excuse for a city I come from - not that lacking crime makes it a shitty city. But god, people here are stupid. Matter of fact, it was rated "dumbest city in the nation" in some magazine study or something, and I believe it. Otherwise we wouldn't let our justice system get away with this shit. I remember in the news a few years back police were just patrolling the neighborhood, saw somebody they thought had a gun and told him to drop it. When he did not immediately let go they shot him multiple times, killing him. When they got closer they realized he was holding a GLUE GUN. I don't think the officers responsible were reprimanded in any way - they were just "doing what we thought was necessary." The guy with the glue gun was black by the way. . . surely that didn't have anything to do with it. . . I'm pretty sure there was another similar incident in the last month as well. Oh more than one friend of mine has been pulled over for little or no reason whatsoever. One of my friends has an old, beat up car with a hood that sticks up a little and flops around on the highway. A cop pulled him over and opened his door (rather than asking him to roll down the window) and saw a marijuana pipe in the door compartment, and took him straight to jail. The reason documented in the police report for pulling him over? "I did not think he realized that his hood was loose." As though you could miss that thing flopping hither and thither in th wind. Another time my friends were followed by cops after driving around and smoking in the country. the police probably saw where they came from, their age and long, unkempt hair, and decided to follow. they followed them all the way across the city waiting for an excuse to pull them over. When they were pulling up to the dorms and had still not screwed up in any way, the cop decided to pull them over anyway. He never gave a reason for doing so, and though they had like three pipes and some marijuana they weren't in any trouble (they all denied owning any of the stuff, except for one of my friends who made the mistake of being honest with a FW cop). They did not get in any real trouble- the police notified the school that they had bene pulled over and they found these things in the car, but none were arrested or even given court dates. I'm pretty sure the reason they didn't get in any real trouble is because the cop did not have any reasonable cause to pull them over in the first place and would have been in a lot of trouble if one of my friends brought a halfway decent lawyer to court. Sorry I sorta rambled about my own tangent subjects. I just hate the police department in this town with a passion.
I guess I could understand a few swings at his legs, but that dude kept going. And then you see backup arrive, so that questions why he even beat the dude in the first place if he knew he had backup coming.
