With apologies to solla and the rest: 1. First of all, unless they play their own private phestival or another music festival of sorts, they won't be able to play a three set, extended show because of curfew laws at whatever venue they play at. 2. More important, do we really expect Phish to want to pick up like nothing's happened after five years? they've been gone for five years and now they might get together. It's like getting back with a former lover, or going back to a former job, or trying to recreate anything that was once a creation -- It's NEVER the same and we shouldn't expect it to be so. Trey said he quit in part because he didn't want Phish to become caricatures of themselves, yet by having them play the exact same shit as they did before, that's exactly what we're doing to them. Frankly, I'd be disappointed if they played the setlists that have been mentioned. Solla, you at least threw two or three new songs into the mix, but that's it? You'd think Phish would play nothing BUT new stuff with maybe 2-3 old tunes in there for their conection value with the phans. I know: lighten up, coventry. I realize that. But if they do come back and start playing and touring, I won't want them to play the same stuff all the time as they did before, nor would I want or expect to just jump back into the flow of 03-04.
they will always play there old tunes. thats what every band ever does. you always grow and put out new material. but the concert will always be made up of old content. they are a band that has existed for 20+ years, most of there content will inevitably be old. and you know they still want to play those songs...who wouldn't?? and do you possibly think they could write a tours worth of new material to keep every night a different setlist?? impossible. even for phish. and if you are so down with the idea of an old song setlist, why wouldn't you make a setlist with new material, spanning from mike, page, and trey solo material, plus some of the fictional "new songs".... it was just for PHUN
and the reason i didn't put more "new songs" thru out my phantasy-setlist is because i don't know what these songs to be like. so its hard to imagine how one would flow with another. i put them in there, precisely to show that i want new material. now and forever i want phish creating and expanding. but to abandon all that they ever were is ridiculous...
OMG! wah wah. what a big cry baby! why on earth would someone take someones fantasy setlist so seriously! 1st of all I don't know what any of the future songs or going to be called so why would i list them. second of all its my fanatasy setlist not yours, I can list the name of the songs I want to hear. And In case you forgot the 1st show back from hiatus was a new years show and it was 3 sets long so the idea of a 3 set show is not out of the question. Its not like solla & myself were predicting what the actual show would be. we were listing a setlist of OUR dream show if they ever came back! if you dont like it predict your own & dont cry about our unrealistic setlists. I guess you missed the name of the thread "post you phantasy setlist" keyword being phantasy
The thread in question is actually called phantasy-come-back-show set-list, with solla's emphasis on the nature of the show being a reunion, not just a fantasy set out of context. it's not crying, Tate, it's a viable argument against Phish jumping straight into nostalgia. Try to master the argument before you get condescending. And yes, as you said, it's your fantasy setlist and thus can be whatever you'd like. Far be it for me to crap in your cornflakes. And I'm not suggesting, solla, that Phish write a tour's worth of new stuff; you're right in that it's impractical and unreasonable. I'm simply addressing something that Trey addressed at the time of the breakup. It'd be nice to hear 90% new shit the first gig back; then the older stuff can go into heavy rotation as the tour progresses with the new stuff brought out the same way Phish always brings their new stuff out.
i wouldn't want to hear more than a handful of new songs at a show. not until they became apart of the tapestry just as everything else. when every new album comes out they dust the shows with the new songs and they start to pop up more and more as the tours go on...there is no point in forcing all new material upon an audience.... personally i wouldn't care if they came back and did pure jam sets like the tower set...and other 4th sets they've had at festivals...i just want to hear those 4 bastards back together...
True, August 15th is the four year anniversary. But by the time they hit the road again -- summer of 2009 at the earliest -- we're talking five years.
