What's a good book about opiate addiction? I don't care if it's fiction or non fiction, memoirs would be especially appreciated, but I'd love a good novel too. Just nothing that's sensational or blatantly exists for no reason other than to convince the reader that OMG DRUGZ R BAD. I know of the works of William S. Burroughs, and Trainspotting although I've read neither. I don't have much interest in Trainspotting because I thought the movie was sub par. Am I making a mistake there?
Trainspotting the book is a little rough to read because Welsh uses the actual slang in the book, and reading it can give ya a headache. Movie was great though in my opinion, but ehh... Junky is great by Burroughs, pretty much the epitome of a drug addiction. There are a couple of less known ones... here's a fine list: http://www.librarything.com/tag/drug+addiction You could also read Erowid reports and testimonials... I read the junkie stories to fall a sleep every once in a while.
Yay I'm not the only one! They are really interesting, the big ones about addiction to K, coke, crack, meth, H, any of em. Hell in a few more years Erowid could publish a book with all that shit in it, it'd probably sell pretty well. I'd get it... The Mushroom Man
SMACK...it was a pretty good book...its like 300-400 pages, and theres no refference to heroin until like 100 pages in, but it is a REALLY good book about heroin addiction.
Wasted, Requiem For A Dream, Wonderland Avenue, and Scar Tissue [haven't actually read unfortunately]
I think Junky by William S. Burroughs was mentioned above, it should be required reading for anyone who thinks they "understand" their opiate use.
hey stig, do you know if you can find that story online? If so could u post a link? Thanks bro. same with that diary of a drug fiend. That one looks interesting too. If anyone finds a link for the full text online, post it please! lol and I stay reading the erowid reports! mad funny how other people do it too. they infact do help you get sleepy. and a lot of them are very interesting and informative.
