The kids have grown up and I'm on my own so I've finally reached that point in time that I need to sell everything, pack up and hit the road. I've done a lot of prospecting over the years so I'm heading up into Sapphire country where I'll to buy a couple of leases and see how my luck pans out. I'm still looking at my future mobile home and still trying to make up my mind on whether to outfit my own van or buy something with everything in place though doing my own thing could delay my departure though.

Anyway once I'm on the road, I'm going to update this thread to share my experiences ....

Hey Rusty, I've been to the Gem fields of Australia. You want to check out the town of Sapphire, as that's where I found most of my sapphires. I once stayed at the Gemini Campground in this very trailer! (see below) The Gemini place is no longer happening but the trailer is still there!

I had a lot of luck my first time there in 1983, but this last time a couple of years ago there wasn't much to find. I was just 'specking, not digging. Too much work in the heat!

    Good luck, mate!

    Hi Skip

The Gemfields are first port of call. I want to buy a couple of leases near Rubyvale but I have yet to look at the area. I'm trying to get up there before the Gemfest at Anakie and intend staying until late November before it gets too hot.

I'll probably head back down to Inverell where the temperature is a lot more tolerable over the summer then move back up.

Let us know how you fare! Post pics of your finds. Are they still letting foreigners take out leases? There were lots of ppl there in campers and motorhomes living on the land.

It's nice there in the winter. Have fun!

I've decided to buy a Jayco Flamingo camper trailer.

Tried one out but was a tad cold this time of year but is going to be great in the summer. The thing is surprisingly large if you are by yourself and has just about everything you need. I'm trying to figure what is the best way to connect to the internet in the middle of the bush so if anybody is far from the nearest town and using internet then any ideas would be good. You never know with all the stuff thats going on in the world at the moment, it could be a good place to be.

Have a ball Rusty .... I don't think you'll have much of a problem there. Look into wireless internet on the Next G network. That seems pretty good but I haven't tested the range to much extent. Don't forget Confest - it's usually toward the end of the year and a good place for gypsies to gather. I think they're thinking of moving it to October .... not sure. Yeah, so the Next G thing is my 2 cents. It's expensive if you use it a lot though. When I'm on the road I use libraries heaps and standard wireless networking to find open networks but you never know when you are going to find one of those.
