That's because no statistics exists. Because tasers aren't that dangerous. But hey... there you go: A study by the Potomac Institute concluded; "Based on the available evidence, and on accepted criteria for defining product risk vs. efficacy, we believe that when stun technology is appropriately applied, it is relatively safe and clearly effective. The only known field data that are available suggest that the odds are, at worst, one in one thousand that a stun device would contribute to (and this does not imply “cause”) death. This figure is likely not different than the odds of death when stun devices are not used, but when other multiple force measures are. A more defensible figure is one in one hundred thousand." Enjoy.
Its good that he was killed imo. I don't want a little fucking 17 year old punk driving around stealing stuff, what kind of shit is that? Your right though, they should have actually tried killing him with a gun instead of giving him a chance at life.
Because that was sarcasm? The kid got what was coming to him. I don't see why that article fired up such a big thread, and i don't see why you guys are fighting with each other because its not doing anything. The kid is still dead, and cops are still going to use tasers whether we like it or not.
Cops should use turds.I know I'd immediately stop what I was doing if they threatened to cover me with dozens of those brownies.
Um, if statistics don't exist, how do you know that it is not dangerous?? 1 in 1,000 could contribute to death, eh? So... lemme see. If in the past 5 years 22 Canadians have died from the use of a stun gun, that would mean that approximately 22,000 people have been tasered in that same amount of time. *researches documented Canadian stun gun use*
K, I know sarcasm when I see it. But that's just my point. Why shouldn't the police officer be charged for second-degree murder if he never intended to kill the boy?
Are they? I doubt it. I'd assume tasers have multiple settings. What do our police forces have their settings at? The hightest, just 'in case'? I'm guessing so. Any information on this? A knife? The cops aren't trained enough to combat a citizen with a knife?? If the cops in this case had had the presence of mind to shoot the kid in the leg, he'd still be alive. Gimpy, but alive. And, available for prosecution. As it is now, he's dead. So fuck any due process. It just seems to me with all the news stories about taser deaths (unruly elder comes to mind from a few months back in a hospital - dimentia of some sort, REAL reason to tase someone to death) more training, research and restraint of use, should be paramount. I've had heart palpatations for the last year (change of life wonderfulness), shoot me in the leg any day over being tased.
I doubt we will ever know the true statistics on taser related deaths: And this little piece about Chicago police wishing to expand their usage of tasers. http://nateo.blogspot.com/2008/02/chicago-police-want-more-tasers.html
Interestingly enough, in case any of you have forgotten, the use of tasers was considered torture by a United Nations committee back in November of last year. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/11/25/national/main3537803.shtml
You people are crazy. If you take away tasers they WILL use guns. Do you honestly want them to use guns that bad?
Guns with rubber bullets would be cool and I'm sure the police would have lots of fun using tear gas. I'd like to see cops and robbers talk over a box of donuts sometime. That'd be cute.
Rubber bullets can be fatal at close range. Cops use tasers because it means they don't have to get physical with anybody. No direct contact. While I don't totally agree to a ban, the use on a minor child is out of line in my opinion. Florida is famous for tasering it's school students. Some were even preteens. We as a people have become too tolerant of what we allow to be used against us in this country. That sets a dangerous precedent. People have forgotten their power. x
What would we be discussing here if the police had decided to manually disarm him and he had stabbed one of them to death?
I can bet you a million dollars that more people have died from rubber bullets than from tazers. You can't just tear-gas someone with a knife. The point here is to keep police brutality down, but that has nothing to do with the kinds of weapons they use. It has to do with proper training and police liability for what they do. At the same time, it's your responsibility, as a citizen, to not be an idiot and put yourself in a position where you are bound to get tased.
Exactly. No one likes the cops, but people seem to forget that they're also people... and that they actually do stop crime... imagine that! There is a whole lot wrong with the police force, but at the same time... our basic safety is dependent on them. I would much rather have them kill a couple of criminals with tasers by accident than have those same criminals out in the open ready to fuck me up for a couple of bucks.
I propose a lower voltage. 50,000 seems to high. How much is in a light socket breaker, 150,000 volts or so?
