I know I'm apposed to it because it is war and violence but I'd like it if someone can tell me what's going on and what are the Canadian soldiers (in particular) roles in it. It's so i can make my argument on why I disagree with it stronger. Thanks

    Peace and love to ALL

The United States got involved with Afghanistan because the United States saw it as a way to weaken the Soviet Union. When anti-Soviet rebels arose in Afghanistan, the United States decided to help the effort, but needed the help of the bordering nation of Pakistan. Pakistan, which was headed by a fundamentalist Muslim gave the United States' aid to other fundamentalist Muslims. The United States also asked Saudi Arabia to help the effort. Unexpectedly, the Pakistanis and the Saudis teamed up to form fundamentalist militarist and terrorist groups, the Taliban and Al Qaeda, respectively. The United States remained in good terms with the Taliban because Unocal needed their support in a business conquest. This apathy towards the growing terrorist group led to the events of September 11th, which were followed by the small-scale bombing of Afghanistan. Because not much capital was put forth in America's revenge on Afghanistan, the key leaders, including Osama bin Laden were able to escape.

I'm not aware of anything about Canada's involvement, but this is a brief explanation of how the US got involved over there. For more info read the chapter on Afghanistan in Steven Kinzer's book Overthrow.

canadas role is stricly peace keeping. the militant groups their are strapping bombs to kids man and rapping woman ( trying to take a hold of the peoples goverment)... not cool canada is there as a hired gun so to speak to make sure human rights issues are corrected or attempted to be corrected. they have guns for protection and only fire if their lives are in immediate danger( this is after a minimum of 3 warning shots) and their rules of engagment are very strict. i am 100 percent opposed to war but i support the canadian troops in the afgan. They also offer clean drinking water, food and medical asistance to the people. They also employ the locals to work in building and maitaining the bases so these people do not need to get involved in the black market just to feed their children.

hope this helps and just so you know i am not getting these facts from the bias media but from first hand explanations my father has told me after being deployed on a peach keeping mission for 8 months in afghanistan

thanks...I kind of figured that's what's going on but i wasn't sure. Well, I don't know, I'm still opposed to the fighting there, I don't guns can ever solve anything. For restoration and what not I support, that's what a military should do not war(and re-name military to world helpers...or something better sounding than that:p). It's confusing...God, it feels like it would be easier to be a conformist..blindly support the government and society so that there is no confusion or stares from others. But at the same time I'm glad that I'm against this system, that I question it constantly..It makes me feel free.

    Peace and Love TO ALL!
