Are you related to the "Diggers" at all? I read about them, how they would give free food and had a "free store". That is pretty sweet.
Love your website Pieman. The upcoming demonstration would be something that the younger hippies could come to and make a difference. Sorry I can't be there - I'm on the other side of the planet
At least untill 1990 the diggerswere still growing in Northern Cal and providing food in the Bay area... john cox
By the Merry-Go-Round. That was the place..I missed em the first time around but in the late 80s some kind folks had revived the idea small scale but there was food and music and bubbles and general niceness
The Diggers Died with the of death of Kenny Wisdom aka Emmitt Grogan in 67'. The Merry Prankesters disburst'd in many directions after that, the mine troup moved downtown. There was still free food after Emmetts death, there were other's who picked up the firestick. Emmett Grogan OD'd on the smack he stole from his friend. He like alot of other's got sidetracked by pretty young girls/boys n hard drugs. That didn't do much for the hippie image. The intent was good, but it ended badly. I still wonder to this day what would have happened if the hard drugs weren't there to kill it all. Where The Movement would have lead humanity. DAMN the DRUGS!!! Peace Love and Hippie Beads <shameless>
I actually think that "the movement" lead to what it needed to. Now we know what hard drugs can and will do and who knows what will come about from that knowledge.
I shouldn't say .. "The movement died".. it did move tho.. it moved to the country which was the whole idea anyway..to get back to the garden..most of the old hippies that made it through, are in the country raising kids and animals and food.. the ones that are still in the city have their own agendas that they are following.. I for one feel that we deserve to kick back and let the youngers carry the flame.. we have earned the right of passage... we have payed our dues.. we still hold our values and we do our best to help where/when needed.. we have learned that change comes with diligence and our votes count. We the People can change things.. Peace Love and Hippie Beads <shameless>
Hey man the old guys aint all moved out yet, We still fightin the man and we wont stop untill somthing is done! Ive payed my dues but im still paying extra to this day because the old hipppies must influance the new to keep the old values man! Oh and sorry kids LSD is not one of them!
I lived in Griffith Park for awhile in 1971. There were quite a few of us at the time who lived in the park. I was only there for about 3 weeks, then met up with a band and lived at their house in Venice for 3 months then Back to Earth Peoples Park in Vermont. I was very young at the time and loved every minute of it. There was a free kitchen in the pic=nic area of the park set up and we would bring what we had...there were some of us who would go on food runs and hit grocery stores dumpsters and find all kinds of decent food thrown away, and bring it back for everyone. i don't know of the "diggers", I have forgotten more than I remember of those times...lol There were some groovy happenings over by the merry-go-round. Music, food, fine people, lots of partying. I remember standing there smoking a joint with cops walking around and no one bothering anyone. I loved my time in Cal. but my heart was in Vermont so I left. Theres a wonderful man I was with out there....and I think about him sometimes, but wouldn't trade my life now for anything. teepi
Yeah, I love Vermont to We still have food not bombs. Every attempt at a love-in I have witnessed turned into a cheesy mess....something for the kinky forum.
hey teepi!!! i was one of the focalizers working with green power giving out free sandwiches at the love-ins!!!hey those were the days that still live in my heart
hey pieman ironically i grew up in nyc and went to the first be-in there on easter sunday 1967 in sheep's meadow in central park. now it seems that you and i have switched places. you live in my hometown and i live closer to griffith park. but the message was all the same for those of us who truly believed in it..peace love understanding and compassion for other human beings. deezee
HAHA..PIEMAN!! Groovy picture. Too bad things are so different these days. I ran around all over West Hollywood in those days and there were so many freaks everywhere I never worried about things. Now I wouldn't hitch hike to the end of my road. At least I have my memories. No wonder so many kids want to hear about our "old daze"....can't get that feeling back...there was a definate groove in our path. I listen to alot of music from then...last night was listening to 'psychotic reaction' and when I close my eyes I drift back but when I open them BOOM....its just not in the air anymore. But at least I have YOU and thanks for bringing up that one for me. teepi
I believed them to be the governments attempt to wipe out the hippie.Later on the Contra guns for dope affair reaffirmed my suspiscions.
cast from "Hair" was entertaining us on stage...my kids and I sitting a couple of feet on the left side of the american flag which was spread out on the ground with brothers and sisters sitting around it, no one was touching it.....suddenly from up above on top of the hill a surreal vision appeared of a very long line reptilians i think now....all dressed up in combat geer, gas masks, weapons of destruction?? yeah they were ready to destroy us however everyone who was sitting on the edges of the flag got up peaceful, put their hands up in the air, then stood quietly while the handcuffs were applied...they were then led up the hill in a line only to disappear for a while...meantime some of the reptilian types were gathered around the flag folding it it the proper protocal.....well after that I don't remember much except a couple of lovers makeing love under a tree but it wasn't long after all the brothers and sisters came back down the hill, the flag was spread out once again and the day continued peacefully and with a lot of love.
i still recall the incident when the la pigs busted some folks for sitting on the flag at the event which was at the merry-go-round area of griffith park around christman 1969.....The troupe had to go thru a lot of crap with the parks commisswion in order to be able to hild the event....some of the "commissioners" thought the play for lewd due to the 30-second nude scene which was NOT presented at Griffith Park.....only at the aquarius theater which was the local indoor venue...perhaps some of those commissioners were afrain to see themselves nude or they feared the experience of a "real orgasm"...anyway i was with green power serving sandwiches and brownies (not the pot-laden alice b. toklas brownies) during the gig....... if anyone remembers me form the love-ins contact me via pieman1024@aol.com
