Hello all, my name is Ross and obviously i live in england. Today is the birthday of one of the wisest men to have ever lived on the planet, Jah Rastafari, Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. I have been reading his speeches and reasonings today, looking to gain some of his wisdom and i think i may have come across something. I have concluded, that somehow, if i could get just one pound from everyone living in the country today, i'd get around about 60 million pounds, now just think of the lives you could save from disease, famine, and suffering. 60 million pounds would stretch a long way, and it doesnt just have to be one pound that everyone gives, it can be more....the sad and apparent truth is that far too many people wouldnt give up a single pound to save the lives of many, and that to me is sick. What i am asking for now my friends, is not for one pound, but for suggestions on how i can accomplish this? and how i can set up some kind of payment process and a way of keeping track of who has, and who hasnt aided the cause. This cause will saves lives, but for those gracious people who aid the cause, it will redeem them from the day to day greed and wastefulness we take for granted today. I would implement some sort of suggestion upon donating to the cause in the case of what to do with the funds raised. Then i would go by the majority. Even if one pound is too much for some greedy individuals (which i find very hard to believe) then even 20p from each person would gain a substantial amount of money over the 5 million or so mark (taking into account kids)..... If i suceed in making this cause a reality, if anyone refuses to give even 20p to this cause, they are seriously giving up on themselves and i believe god will judge them harshly for this. I just pray to god i have some kind of way of making this dream a reality. Comments, suggestions, and any advice is gladly appreciated.
There's an urban legend about an American university student who put an advert in the local paper asking everyone to send him a dollar. Those who read it and contributed practically put him through uni. Aside from that, this is why charities were invented.
Sadly i know of all the people who have exploited the good will of people in the past and they will undoubtedly have made my mission so much more difficult, but such a small amount from each person can help the lives, even save the lives, of literally hundreds of thousands of people, maybe even millions. If there is even the slightest glimmer of hope that i may acheive this goal then i will always strive to attain it. The great nations of the world would do well to remember that in the modern age even their own fates are not wholly in their hands. Peace demands the united efforts of us all. Who can foresee what spark might ignite the fumes? - Haile Selassie.
it is a large amount, but what will 60 million actually achieve? and what about when you'd collected it all, how would you choose where it would be best spent? starving familes in africa, or displaced chinese workers, or street kids in india? personally (although i think it's a very commendable idea, you would undoubtedly save lives) i believe it would be better to invest your time actually campaigning for change. peace isn't going to be brought around by money (especially a finite and relatively small donation, you help people once and when they've finished with what you've given them what next? their governments are still persecuting them, torture/murder/droughts/disease continue), and if that's what you want then maybe there's a better way of showing it.
Everyone in this country already contributes more than 100 times that much through taxes. The Department for International Development's webpage gives detailed statistics on the UK government's expenditure on international aid, which in 2006 included £6,770m as official development assistance (ODA) (whatever that means). http://www.dfid.gov.uk/aboutdfid/statistics.asp The overheads for one individual to collect such small sums from each individual in the UK would be utterly infeasible. It would be more cost-effective for you to devote your efforts to lobbying the government to increase the amount of aid it funds from general taxation.
I am thinking that we are already doing something, but of course we need to do more. If you by Volvic mineral water, 1L=10ml for third world country or something. Imagine that.
