Anyone ever been robbed while traveling. Or lost important documents, like wallet or passport. Damn hassle and a half, aint it. Lets hear those stories.

I've been robbed twice and lost my wallet once. I'll tell stories later, I gotta go to bed.

when in lima 2 years ago with a cuple of mates, we stumbled off the main drag into what seemed like a scene from the film City of God. about 15 blokes relieved my mate of his watch. fortunatley my stuff was concealed next to the crown jewels. now i always carry about 20 quid in my pocket and hide the rest...and don't wear a watch

I was mugged in Amsterdam, but I was walking about the streets at 5 am trying to get a picture of the sunrise. The two dudes approached me saying, "Oh Bob Marley, he's chill man". (I was wearing a Robert Nesta Marley shirt). They went on to tell me about how they just went to a Damian Marley concert and I love to talk with people (especially from different parts of the world), so I continued to talk with them. Eventually they asked me for money and I said I had very little (I'm poor, so I travel accordingly). They didn't really seem like they needed it either. I went on to tell them that it wasn't right for them to claim to be Marley fans and then try to take my possessions (literally everything I had was in my backpack, clothes etc...) One of them said he was peaceful but his friend was not and he began to push me around. I still didn't give in, it was just the principle that bothered me. Eventually they took what they wanted and I took a bit of a beating, but hey the world goes on....

Logo tee-shirts,athletic shoes, shorts, jogging suits, baseball caps, and a camera around the neck. Dress as inconspicuously as possible;tourist = target. If you wear a waistbelt-style security wallet under your clothing, it may look less bulky and feel more comfortable placed at the small of your back. www.saf-t-pockets.com If you must put your purse or backpack on the ground, put your foot through the strap. If you need help, look for a police officer or pop into a business for assistance. Use an inexpensive or disposable camera instead of the pricey one you use at home. A local grocery bag or a local newspaper give everything the appearance of a local. If you have a long layover and need to sleep in an airport, train, or bus station, use a cable lock to secure your belongings to your chair or your body. www.corporatetravelsafety.com You could be in danger of losing your life over a single piece of jewelry in some countrys. Don't take any chances!

Olympic, I never thought of the local shopping bag, but that is an excellent idea. As for the camera, like I afford an expensive one in the first place. But that is good advice, because one day I will be rich, I swear.. I have been asked for directions, Once in New York City, Three times in Madrid, once in London and once in Sydney, because I do dress inconspicuously.

Another piece of advice, don't read a map in the street. Dip into a McDs, a public toilet or some other business. Truth tourist = target and only a tourist would stand on a street and read a map.

I live in the uptown parts of New York so I've been confronted a few times by strangers at night and sometimes at day. Ironically enough though they've never succeeded in robbing because the neighborhood tends to help one another so I usually end up having some other people coming and helping fend them off. Good to know theres still some good people around here. Only time I've ever been robbed it wasn't in my face, rather in a classroom where people would wait for a time that I might be asleep and then go in my bag. Now when I do go to class i put my bag under my desk like everyone else but I put my foot through the strap so if someone pulls on it they'll pull my leg and I'll bust em on the spot. ;)

I had my backpack with wallet and driver's license stolen in Australia, and more recently, I was sleeping on the beach of Perhentian Kecil, with the cord of my bag wrapped around my leg. I foolishly neglected to put the bag under the towel I was using for a cover.. I woke up maybe an hour and a half later, did my automatic check for my bag, and all that was there was the cord. someone'd actually brought tools for the job..

didn't lose anything important other than my notebook that I'd kept for well over a year, and I liked the bag itself and the wallet that was in there. the girl I was with had two cameras, amongst other things, in her bag, and they left all of her stuff intact. so it was far better they steal my bag than hers, which was a consolation.

Ive been robbed a few times. The first time ever was when I was in Nigeria. Id bought some beer and was in a taxi on my way back to my guesthouse. The driver pulled over, smiled and waved a pistol at me, and then ever so politely asked me for my beer and my money. Needless to say, I gave it to him, and he drove me the rest of the way without saying anything.

In Hanoi early one morning I got followed by a bunch of motobike drivers who cornered me and waved a knife in my face and demanded I give them the amazingly specific amount of US$60. I told them I only had $8 on me and they took that. Then one of them offered to take me "anywhere in Old Quarter with me, 20,000 dong." A rip off at the best of times, I told him to fuck off. I was pretty lucky that time, because Id actually only just arrived from the airport, and I had ALL my possessions with me, which they could have taken, if they wanted to.

But the biggest pain in the arse was when my return plane tickets, travellers cheques and passport got soaking wet on a boat ride between Livingstone (Guatemala) and Punta Gorda (Belize.) A huge storm hit the boat just after we left the harbour and we got soaked. Jesus arranging new cheques and plane tickets is a pain in the arse.

Luckily a nice Belizian woman let me borrow her hair dryer to dry my passport off though, so that was lucky, and very nice of her.

I got $2000.00 stolen from a hotel safe in Iquitos, Peru. I'm pretty certain the hotel manager did it. He tried his best to keep me from making a police report but I turned it in anyway. He then went out of his way to try to cause me trouble for the rest of my trip. What a sorry piece of shit
