Hi everyone ,I'm Irish and had a hard time finding someone to dread my hair on this little island but when I did he really seemed to know his stuff. The thing is he didn't back comb them at all, he just tied each of them in one big knot at the base and knotted them up from there .My locks are very short but locking up in a nice way,My question is Whats the story with the main knot ? Will it grow out resulting in one big knot half way down my dread and how do I lock up the hair at the root and the frizz with the knot in the way ?
Can anyone help ? Has anyone used this method ?

hmm I don't know about that. Generally, the thing that causes knots is movement. It seems like the knot would restrict movement of the hairs. movement=knots, knots=dreads.

If I find a loose dread I twist it then tie it in a loose knot for a few days.
When I unravel its curly but goes to normal after a wash.
Ive found this helpful in tightening things up a bit ;)
I don't see any harm if you were to let the knot at your root out.

Will they not just come go loose if I dont wax them ,at least at the tips, its just I have mad wavey hair and my locks are ending in one big curl .I want them to have the best start in life and I'm worried by the fact that he didn't do any back combing

Hey man, brand new here myself so not a seasoned veteran with dreads; in fact I'm just getting started.
From reading around this forum it's been made abundantly clear by a lot of people that you should definately not use wax. In the short term it helps new dreads take shape but it's a vanity you'll pay for later on; wax will become nasty as it's left in there and pick up all sorts of debris.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the lack of back-combing either. Again, that's another quick starter; a less harmful one, apparently, but still has the consequence of causing some damage to your hair.
I'm going for the patience approach. Don't fully know what I'm doing yet but I've read around here and learnt that dreads naturally form if you just give your hair time. It's the longest way to dreadlocked hair but it's healthiest.

Yea I put that much together myself apart from the bit about the wax ,see every few days I give the needle to someone in my life and they pick a lock each and tidy it up.After that happens they need a little wax .I dont think a little wax one dread at a time will do any harm plus I've started this way so I'll just wait and see .It's all about takin it handy

no get the wax out all of it its evil and will most likelyt mean losing your dreads

the knot methiod hmm i need to see a picture but sounds like this guy had no idea how to dread your hair
once your hairs wax free then you can backcomb your own hair and get help from just anyone to do the back..if you want
but your hair sounds perfect for going natural

at this point though your only concern shopuld be removing wax\
even if that means combing it all out and starting over
umm whats the needle for? dont poke holes in your dreads..dont put any wax in ever ..remove all thats in there now..which isnt easy to doi..its evil shit..
once your wax free then you can choose natural backcomb twist n rip or whatever, as long as u use no wax and residue fre soap though it wont matter what method u use they'll all result in dreads just natural will result in natural looking dreads..more organic..and backcombing will result in more uniform manufacturesdd lookintg dreads

Yea man deep down I know your right .Its one big knot at the roots its a security thing i'll take each one out in a few weeks when i'm more confident that they've locked up.why not poke holes in them how else will I pull loose hairs from one side of the lock through its core to the otherside will this not help them lock up faster ? Its too late to talk bout back combing "I think, I hope" but theres one that I sleep on and its come loose so I'll try back combing it and see what the diff is .I'm not vain but I want them to look neat.

I'm new here myself and been browsing the forums, some great info.
I'm going for the natural way but i tend to play with my hair - like rub my
hand through it allot. Is that a bad thing or will that help it matt up
    faster.

Ok I haven't been puttin any more wax in and your right they look much better and have doubled in volumn but every day when I get up all my dreads have gone from straight to a sort of C shape .I've been using the twist and rip method which seems to be workin but I'm afraid to wash them incase I have to start over. Also the knots at the roots are coming loose I'd say in a week or two I'll have enough room to slip the entire dread through the knot leaveing me whit an inch or two of straight hair at the root, how do I lock it up from there ? and the tips are very loose how do I lock them up ? Thanks for the reply man

the roots will aLWAYS HAVE AN INCH OR SO LOOSE HAIR THATS NORMALK..LEAVE EM ALONE
THE TIPS WELL THE TIPS NATURALY WILL HAVE AN INCH OR SO LOOSE UNLESS U FORCEW BLUNTNESS WHICH LOOKS INATURAL (AFRICAN HAIR HOWEVER WILLK NATURALY LOCK TO THE TIPS CAUSING BLUNT ENDS BUT CAUCASION HAIR WILL HAVE LOOSE WHISPY ENDS UNLESS YOU FORCE THE BLUNTNESS damn caps
i wouldnt bother forcing it though they look better and more natural if yoiu leave em be

as for poking holes..even the thinnest needles are many times thicker then the thickest hair..so every poke even just below the surface breaks dozens of hairs poking al the way through you break hundreds of hairs
each hol;e weakens the dread as a whole
in addition you pull 1 hair in but break 100 that causes 100 new haior ends in the middke of the dread that can work theyre weay ourt and become new hairs to pull back in

    just leave them alone
they'll work theyre opwn way in

now that you stopped gooping the dreads up with wax youi need to remove the wax u piut in
thats not easy at all wax was a huge mistake
i think tjose knots were too
odviosly the guy who did yours was clueless
take the knits out and search for my thread "the sticky icky wax sticky (wax removal)"
    or something like that
theres useful info in there for removing the wax..if you domnt remove it all your dreads will suffer..even if removing it means yoyur drweads fall apart now in the long run your gonna be much better off
most wax dreads get cut off in under 3 years
if you want nice drewads that last..get rid of the wax even if it means starting over
