It's a little known fact that Apocalypse Now is based on a book called Heart of Darkness, which takes place in the 1800's, and I think it's set on the Amazon river.... though I have not read the book in many years...

As far as the movie goes...... well Epic is really the only word I can think of to describe it. Dennis Hopper as the creepy journalist is fuckin awsome, and the surf champion going crazy was cool....

But nothing will ever beat Brando as Kurtz.... ever!!!!
The part where Harison Ford plays the tape of Kurtz talking about watching a snail crawl on the edge of a razor gives me chills every time...

    Good 'Nam movies:
Platoon, which is based on director Oliver Stones time spent fighting in 'nam
Full Metal Jacket, "Animal Mother!!!" Nuff said.
The Deer Hunter, love this fuckin flick, love DeNiro, love Walken, and also based on a great book...... the Russian Rolette scene is fuckin hardcore, a lot of what happened during that scene is real. the director told the solders to really slap and beat Deniro and Walken, with out them knowing it. So when Deniro says."I'm gonna Fuckin kill you, you mother fucker, etc." He really means it, you can see it, it's real emotion.... more chills...
Hamburger Hill is another clasic and one of the few that is based on a true story. check it out, it's worth a watch.

Yeah, the whole bit about the French Colonists was pretty boring and I found it hard to keep my attention on the movie for that section.

but he uses T.S. Elliot quotes!!!

Heart of Darkness(which the film, as said above, is based on) is a psychological story about humanity's descent into madness. A man travels down a river in the Congo, in search of the lost Dr Livingston, and he comes across more and more depraved human behavior the deeper into the jungle he goes.

Having seen it for the first time not long ago, I can safely say this is in my top 5 movies I've ever seen. It just captures the atmosphere of the war so brilliantly, at least for me it did. The beginning sequence with The Doors 'The End' was pretty shocking the first time I saw it. Awesome film.

Reading your post, I thought you were going to go all pro-war on us. Loe the little twist at the end.

I don't know. I love the original, but the Redux is just an updated version tailored to Hollywood's progressive interest in sex, drugs, and violence. All that was really added/changed were sex scenes and more violent takes of the battles. Everything new in that version is unnecessary, IMO.

Yeah we even skipped parts like that and it seemed too long.

Did anyone expect any less from Coppola?
