You know what makes me mad? That energy and spirit that existed in the 60s - that changed the world through protest - doesnt exist anymore! No one will take the time to get off their bums to do anything about the world! Some people say "well there's just nothing to protest any more blah blah blah". Excuse me? Is everyone suddenly happy with the fact that America is at war for the dumbest reasons there are? (theres no reason at all for war anyway) And now its suddenly okay that we're destroying the rain forest at the speed of light when its known to very possibly hold the only cure for cancer? Everyone says they care, but no one will leave their television sets long enough to do anything about it. That right there is why an idiot like Bush could get re-elected. Come on people, someone has to do it! We all need to join together like the good ol days! It's the only way anything will ever change!

Because unlike those days it isn't cool to be a hippy. There are newer ways to piss off your parents.

it exists, just not on the scale that it did then i guess... realize even the 60s made mistakes, and did not do things right with all they potentially could have done. they made themselves out to be freaks, and dressed crazy and did things which many people considered absurd, and still do... but all of that stuff had absolutley no relation with the real movement, which you cant really see on a t shirt, it was all in their heads, always has been and always will...i am not condemning the 60s, but they too were human and made mistakes...

Fractual is right....we made Lots of mistakes, and not being taken very seriously was one....at first....but then there became a collective energy, felt, not seen. We were of one mind, all across the nation, big city, small town, no matter....there was a hum. The vibrations of our oneness of the likes that has never been since. And it does still hum within us, yes, quieter now, we are all old and grey but not burned out. We recognize one another, on the street, in the coffeehouse, everywhere we go we see a familiar soul. And we are still one. And yet all we say is right on, right on. And give thanks that we were there. Peace, rubymontana

*Crying* Why do people have to keep making these threads!?!

You do know that most people in the 60's didn't care all that much either, right? It's not like everyone was a hippie in the 60's...

That makes me think of another factor that brought this movement on - the post WWII baby boom. There were so many kids around who were of the same age... it was almost inevitable that something would spring out of that. Today, having kids is not so much the priority anymore. I wonder if things would have been different had there not been a baby boom.

Purplesage...youcould be right, there were so damn many of us. And right too about there being less concerned today with having kids, hell, my daughter is 31 years old and still doesn't want children. But you know every generation has it's kind, and you just get together and move with it.....Much harder to do with less people involved I know.

I so wish we had the huge numbers and the spirit of your generation Ruby.

By the way I'm childless too (only because I've never felt old enough)... our parents are going crazy waiting for some grandchildren! Hehehe

People are too wrapped up in their identities.
They have to label themselves and try to build up this image in their minds of who they are. It's like they have to have these specific sets of beliefs, names, etc just to have some comfort and feel some security in their lives. It's all a bullshit excuse for not taking the time to examine important things.
They create these identities to avoid waking up one night from their ignorance and saying, "What am I doing? Who am I really?"
As long as they can make up excuses and find other trivial things to waste their lives on then they don't care.

No one cares. And most of those who care in the slightest are either too lazy to do something about it or are too skeptical to believe that things can be changed. It's sad really.

I think it might have something to do with how alot of people believe that college, and a materially driven life is the best choice. There just aren't enough people who think otherwise...
    YET...
    I hope it happens tho.

I hope more of us wake up.

I take offense to that. I am a college student. Of course it's not for everyone, but remember (in the words of the president of my university): THE LAST THING THE WORLD NEEDS IS ANOTHER DUMB ACTIVIST!

Actually, I did see that coming from you, being the predictable person that you are. (and by the way, your pot-shots are SO impressive  )

By disagreeing with me, are you essentially saying that the world NEEDS more dumb activists??! NEWSFLASH: It is possible to be law-abiding and still make a difference in the world. Some laws, such as the former law permitting slavery in this country, are morally wrong and should be broken. But to imply that people who abide by the laws that they agree with are lazy is ludicrous. Breaking laws for the sake of breaking laws is retarded. If anyone in this world is lazy, it's people like you who are obsessed with finding their "inner selves" through EXTERNAL substances and who don't care enough of the have-nots of this planet to do anything productive.

I have the Encyclopaedia Brittanica yearbook that covers 1967. Sociologists studying the subculture found that a rather large proportion, 68%, had at least some college education. Read into that what you will.

It also states that 69% were employed.

I don't see the relationship between being an activist and breaking the law. I'm sure there are plenty of legal things an activist can participate in.
