Can anyone help in a trip from Canada/northern USA to California?

Hiya all, there is a possibility that a friend and I may want to be heading south through the US to California, but it's all a little in the works as I live in the UK so need to get over there first lol

Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions or coinciding trips? I would be happy just with a trip some of the way or anything really, and am happy with making it a slow journey over several weeks.
