So, I was thinking again about the septum...and I think I'm totally ready to go for it. I don't have any piercings right now. I used to have cartilage pierced and I self-piercing part of my ear another time but I haven't had those two for about 3 years...

Anyways, back to septum. I was looking around in the past threads about septum piercings, but could only find threads where septum was in the title so it was limited.

Can anyone answer some questions for me about them and getting one. I was thinking about just going to a shop to ask my questions and to find out which shop is most safe and professional (which means I prolly won't go to the Hells Angels run one...which is my sister's shop of choice and where I got the cartilage piercing)... But anyways, I hope someone can help ;)

So, I was wondering about what they can put in my nose to begin with. Cause I know that you can't change the jewelry until it's healed, I would want something hidable...They could start with a retainer right, or would I be able to get some kind of ring put in (I know very little of piercing jewelry...) that I could flip up without risking damage? I also read about piercers have a lot of difficulty making sure the piercing is straight...Is that a big issue, did anyone have trouble with who pierced their septum? And is it terribly noticable if it is crooked?

I'm going to stop there, I'm rambling because I smoked up a li'l. I think I'll wait for some responses before trying to ask more questions...I just hope someone replies without being scared off with the length of this post...Thanks for any and all advice and thoughts!

haha the septum piercing is an awesome piercing! I love mine, its probably my favorite :) here's the run down ...

The #1 rule (in my opinion) is to go to a reputable piercing studio/artist! They will know what they are doing and have the proper training and knowledge to place the piercing in the correct spot. If you go to a reputable piercer, you shouldn't have a problem with it being crooked.

The septum piercing first off is not a cartilage piercing, and a trained piercer will know that. It goes through the soft tissue between the cartilage in the tip and in the bridge of your nose. If you take your fingers and pinch and pull that area a little you will feel it. The amount of space and soft tissue you have varies from person to person.
(Now, if you are getting a larger gauge jewelry in your piercing (4, 2, 0+...) they would have to punch out cartilage with a dermal punch. For your question though, I'vel based my answers on the assumption that you want a normal size septum piercing, 14g)

If you need to hide your piercing, most piercers have no problem doing this piercing with a retainer (the square horse shoe shaped ones most of the times). Make sure you tell them you need to hide your piercing before you go back to the room and the needle is through your nose ;)
Here's a link for an awesome gallery of septum piercing pictures:

To change jewelry or get a smaller gauge, the piercing has to be completely healed. I have a 20g continuous ring in my septum, but the size of your jewelry is completely personal preference. :D
Here's a pic of my septum (among other piercings lol):

If you have any other questions, just ask! Don't be afraid.

    Imagical,

Your chest piece is awesome(I like the septum too). Anyway, I've toyed with the idea, but don't really like the hassle of healing piercings because my body heals piercings very slowly. But, now, I've got the itch. I always wanted to do mine with a retainer and stretch to somethign I could get a small bone through.

    Cheers

Thank you so much imagical, that really helped.

I am going to try to ask around to find a good piercer so I don't get messed up.

Just another question, I heard that swimming before it's healed is a bad idea, but that salt water can be good for the peircing, what about swimming in a saltwater pool?

In a normal pool its the chlorine and other chemicals that you want to avoid. With a new piercing I know you want to avoid the beach as well, but as far as saltwater pools go, you should ask the piercer you end up going to. I'm not sure how it would affect a fresh piercing, but after you've had the piercing a little over a week, I cant see it causing major damage :)

Salt water soaks or spray are awesome and speed up the healing time for all new piercings. H2Ocean is a good product thats great and convenient. Here's their link: http://h2ocean.com/
Most tattoo/piercing shops carry it (at least in my area).

    hope this helps!

You have no idea how much this has helped me. Can't thank you enough. I think I'm going to get it down around the end of summer (cause of the pool thing). I'll definitely be heading out in the next few weeks to find a good piercer ;)

Once again, thanks...I was worried nobody was going to respond in the first place.

if your wanting to hide it, get the horseshoe ring ( this will hurt pretty bad if you do it right away) but where the opening of the ring is, you can flip it up inside your nose. It really won't matter too much if it is pierced crooked because gravity will pull into straightness. i've had my septum done 2 times and both times it was pireced crooked ( it's very hard to do straight because if you make a movemnt while the piercers lining you up, it will go in slightly crooked....and the natural reaction when someone sticks something into your noes is to pull away) aaaaaannnnnnnnnyways, i just took mine out last night but enjoy urs :)

Please do not listen to her. Not only is that advice completely wrong, I can tell by that statement that she is NOT a professional piercer. PM me and I can give you a whole list of websites that can tell you that the above information is incorrect. Pools, and especially chlorine, are bad for your fresh piercing.

ok, this is true, i'm not a professional, but i have had 27 pirecings, therefore learning a bit on my travels. regardless, i suppose i can only speak from experiance ( for what its worth). when i got my belly button pierced( my first jab) i wanted to swim soo badly because it was a beautiful summer day and there were pools everywhere, so i called a ROFESSIONAL and asked them if it would be alright and they said that it would be. like i said, i have 3 new piercings this summer ,none of which have been irrated in the least and i have been a pool geek this summer(haha :D) My boyfreind just got his eyebrow pierced and has also been in the pools with no harm done. i don't think i am any exception to the human race at large or have an ammune system of steel but i'm just saying it didn't hurt me at all.

and to imagical: love the tatt on the chest, looks wicked!

I repeat what I said before. Pools, beaches, even longs baths are not good for fresh piercings.

Now shine_crazydiamond, you might be able to go swimming and your new piercing will be fine, but most people would have a longer healing time or have some irritation which could lead to infection.
shine_crazydiamond, if you heal faster and find that swimming causes no problems thats great, for you.

Most of the time its not for everyone else. I say as a general rule, to avoid pools and beaches. You only have to wait a few months before you can jump back in the water any way.
But if you really want to go swimming, wait till summer is over to get your piercing =o)

oh and thanks for the compliment shine_crazydiamond =o)

Yeah, the whoel pool thing is kinda sketchy, I wouldn't want to take any risks on this, especially since it's in the nose. Thanks for the advice. I just really wasn't sure, because of the saltwater pool...I knew chlorine ones were bad, but if beaches aren't good as well, I'll definitely have to wait 'til the end of summer then.

    Thanks!

I have my septum pierced too. Its at 8G right now. I got it pierced at 14G and eventually stretched it to 8G. I use to wear a big hoop in it but most of the time it was flipped up into my nose and it irritated it a lot. I changed it to a retainer, but me having a habit of always picking my nose, it did get in the way a little bit. I then changed it to a small 8G plug and its been perfect since then. This is the perfect way to hide the septum piercing. A lot of the people I meet dont even know I have the piercing.

I got it pierced at one of the most reputable piercing places in rhode island by one of the most reputable piercers in the state. His name is Joe Yglesias and he's the owner of Evolution Piercings. He was trained by Fakir and he's done a lot for the piercing industry. He put bills for piercing laws in RI which put a basic standard for all piercing shops. Things like sterilization, procedure, explaination of the aftercare, customer service, and a lot of other shit. He made sure that there weren't sleazy unprofessional piercers running around. He's also a diabetic too and he told me that because of this, each single modification he gets takes a lot of commitment because on his body, it heals 3 times as slow as on other people's bodies.

Ok here's a pic of my septum.
