Here i said it, there is no such thing as a disorder, as the human brain is always in balance, unless it's damaged.

Bah, critisize it as much as you want, but i'm out of this place.. maybe i'll come back in a few years *waves*

    Peace and love

sometimes neurons dont grow properly as in other individuals and this does cause a chemical imbalance... like increased output of dopamine due to improperly grown dopamine tranmitters/receptors causes schizophrenia...

Well, I wouldn't say they're bullshit as I have a few but I definitely think they get overplayed in our society. They are a useful tool in diagnosis and treatment but as far as labeling someone with their disorder I think it sends them the wrong message and leads to identity issues that make the disorder even more a part of who they are. I'd like it if they were called 'patterns' perhaps and doctors told you which 'patterns' your thoughts adhere to and to what extent. Then you could simply be on the look-out for certain thoughts and behaviors and attempt to reduce them. With mild disorders I think this would work much better.

I was in a bad mood, but i'm probably do going to take a hipforums break for a while.. to much negative energy on these boards.. i wonder where all the hippie idealism went

    But back ontopic..

Disorders are bullshit, everyone is who he is, it is society that creates the concept of disorders, if you cannot function like everyone else.. then you must have a disorder..
I tell you, that every healthy brain has in some sort balance, even if it lacks somewhere.. the brain will auto-balance it.. like when someone becomes blind he gets better hearing abilities..
With the brain it is just the same, in that way disorder is wrong in the meaning of the word, because the brain isn't disordered.
It's our tolerance lacking-society that creates stereotype mental-ill people.. alot of people just self-indentify themselves with a disorder they have been diagnosed with.
Everyone is who he is.. there really isn't more to it.. self-acceptance is the only way that leads to finding your true identity.

Seriously, people need to stop looking for reasons of their behaviour, and accept their true self, even if this true self comes in conflict with society, their is nothing more valuable then your own personality, and if it is our incompetent society that lacks every form of tolerance, then screw them, as you are more important then society..
Even people with shizofrenia and that kind of things, shizofrenia only comes to the surface when the individual is under heavy stress.. for that reason, our society must learn more tolerance and acceptance, to offer those people a less stressfull enviroment.

No-one is disordered, if their is anything disoreder then it is society, not the individual.

Change society, not yourself.. damn where did the hippie spirit went? did everyone left it behind after the 70's?

What about people that are naturally violent? Does this fit with the hippie ideal? Should we just get burglar alarms and keep our kids locked up to protect them while these people run around unchecked?

Just feeling you out, man. No judgments, really. I'll need some clarification before I fully agree with you, but I understand where you are coming from. I don't agree with doping people up immediately without talking through shit first or just because they act a little tweaky sometimes, but really, when you're a danger to yourself and others, you can't blame people for trying to find out why and possibly try to prevent it, cure it, or at least treat it.

At least ideally, that's what they're trying to do.

I don't believe that a aggresive nature, is soley caused by the individual. I believe that people with a extremely aggresive nature are the product of our society, and probably partly caused by uncaring parents and/or other unhappy things in their close enviroment.

Raise a kid with love, look at their inside, not only judge them by their outside.. and raising a kid is not only the job of a parent, but also of society, and society fails in this part.. i myself don't find this society the ideal enviroment for a kid. In a ideal society, i don't believe that buglars and murderers would exist, soley because their would be no reason to steal, or to murder someone. And i won't accept that a healhty raised individual would kill some-one just for the sake of it, or just for the fun of it.. those people only exist because of this rotten society.

You're right. However, usually people with disorders have 'damaged brains'. Either they are chemical deficient, chemical overloaded, have a tumor pressing on a gland etc-that can all be considered damaged.
I know for me I was stuck int he birth canal for too long and was blue and was shaken as a baby. Both of these gave me learning disabilitiies and changed/ damaged the chemical structure of my brain.

That's fine, but that idealistic description is not a reality for many children, so the question is, what do we do with the people that have turned out that way in the meantime? You can't go back in time and change it, so what do you do?

That said, I do in fact believe in a chemical imbalance. I have seen people with psychotic depression say they believe they are the devil and that they are supposed to kill their children. I have doubts that this is simply because their daddy didn't hug them enough when they were little.

I still believe it's society, many "disorder" like you call them, wether it is psychosis, personality disorders, etc.. i believe that they are because of this society, if you look at the numbers of mental-ill in the past and those of now, you'll see a increase, i believe it's because of this prestation society, many people are not fit to deal with the stress this society brings along, and that is the origin of those disorders..
You need to deal with the origin of the problem in order to heal the problem itself..

And i do not believe in chemical imbalance, ones brain will always try to regain balance, even if a brain function is damaged other functions will prestate better, often people with disorders are crap in one thing, but are great artists, or whatver..

I can just say, no-one is perfect, it are imperfections that make us unique, and we just have to accept them.

ps: Believe me, locking up mental-ill won't cure them... the right enviroment is what could cure those people, and a mental instute is not the enviroment what those people need.. and i speak out of experience..

Disorders, or any kind of mental/emotional instability is a result of a damaged brain, as Bella stated, but also because of societal circumstances or influences. When people react to certain people, places or things, neurons react immediately to the situation. Be it emotions, thoughts or physical activities, your neurons are messengers in the brain. Even with one neuron out, communication in all aspects of the human body gets thrown out of whack. If something were to happen, be it a chemical imbalance caused by a medical condition or something as severe as blunt trauma to brain, those actions will create reactions resulting in disorders or syndromes. The greatest thing about the human body though, is that it knows when it's in trouble and immediately tries to repair itself, and sometimes outside help is needed.

People don't realize that yes, EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY IS IN YOUR BRAIN. Anything that has to do with anything happens first in your brain, but if there is some communication error with any part of the body, the brain reacts accordingly. We're all the same biological creatures whether we like to admit it to ourselves or not. We're no better than any of the animals in the world--- we've just evolved in a different niche and habitat that accommodates us as a species. Even animals have chemical disorders that need to be treated sometimes.

You are entitled to believe that, but I still would like to hear your alternative for dealing with them.
I agree that we overmedicate, etc. and our system is far from perfect, but to say that it NEVER helps would be a mistake. At least it gets people off the streets that could be a potential harm to themselves and others.
I'm not trying to make excuses or give props anywhere. Just saying... yes, it's a mess, but it's not ALL bad.

    i used to believe that,
    i used to just think i should accept that the way i feel (defined by society/modern medicine as "depressed") was who i was;
that there was nothing wrong with me, i was just me.

but when you start to feel suicidal (which is something i still feel ashamed i ever felt), and you feel like the only reason you haven't ended it yet is because of the guilt of knowing how hurt your parents would be if you tried to end your life (and, thus, your pain),
when you start to feel like that,
i went to the doctor for the sake of my parents and loved ones.
and then i was, of course, diagnosed as someone with a "disorder".

a major depressive disorder. somewhat chronic.

and, the psychoanalyst is there to help me find these "reasons" you speak of, so i can change my life. so i can work out what ways my brain has been formed in the critical early years.

    comments?

    discuss.

Humans are much like computers in that they have both hardware and software.

Disorders can be caused by one or the other, or both.

The mind (software) has no reality other than what it believes to be "true". When it goes bad, its usually because something organic is going on with brain chemicals. This is the ONLY time I'd use chemicals to bring the balance back to where it should be.

I have a real problem with doctors who are quick to write a script for somebody with "depression". These drugs are way way over prescribed nowadays. Depression itself is way over diagnosed. The world has seldom seen the prosperity we enjoy today. What is there to be depressed about?

Doctors sometimes don't take the time to consider it might be a software problem related to belief, therefore, no chemicals needed. This is where counciling comes in.

I would say if meds help, take them. But keep in mind you may be able to live without them someday.

Maybe you're just young and impressionable?

Golly. It doesn't take a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. :)

But the medical profession is about money first and people second nowadays. They have been known to create both the condition and the cure that relieves it.
