Mark Chapman is the guy who shot John Lennon in Dec. 1980. He may go free this week after 24 years in prison. What he did was just terrible, killing one of the worlds greatest singers/lyricists for absolutely no reason. We should try and petition against him, and be sure that this man continues to realize the atrocity of his actions 24 years ago.
Man commits murder. Man serves time. Justice is done. Lennon dying was the best thing for his carrer anyway, it guaranteed him immortatlity in a way that continuing with his music never could.
I wonder what he would have done had he not been attacked/survived the gunshot. Would he still be making music today? Would he have tried to re-form the Beatles group in the 80s or 90s (though i doubt that would have worked)
anybody actually remember hearing about it when it happened? i was still 8 years away when it happened, so id like to hear what some of you thought and felt that day in 1980. Please share!
Anyone know if the guy got any psychological help while he was locked up? I've never looked into that. That's what he needed anyway. If he's been mentally helped, then great, let him out. If not...god...that's not good cause the dude needed some serious help.
Newsflash: Hes gonna stay in jail because of the "extreme malicious intent" of his crime. Poor bastard, 24 years is long enough
I took a criminal law class and found out that in 48 states, if you're shot and it's judged to be attempted murder, it doesn't matter what you'd like anymore. They don't care if you press charges or not. Lennon would have wanted him out of jail right away, I think, but honestly, I don't think that should hold any precedence (and it doesn't and won't). I don't believe in the revolving door, rehabilitation program for murderers. Petty criminals? Sure. Rapists? Sure, after much longer than the typical present charge of 2-5 years, but murder? No. If we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you murdered someone, you should stay in jail all your life. You took a life, and you no longer deserve to have a life. Life in prison or death are the only two acceptable answers for a proven murder, in my opinion. Sure we're running out of room for them, so what? Make room! I'll be willing to pay any percentage of tax it takes to keep these people in jail for the rest of their lives.I'm not a violent person, but saying "poor guy" because he served his maximum sentence of 20 years for pre-meditated murder under a flawed justice system is simply not a good statement to make. The guy killed someone, game over. The scariest thing I learned in Criminal Law was that if it's second degree or third degree, without proven pre-meditation, the guy can be out in as little as 2 years with probation. What? My life is gone and he's out on the streets enjoying things I'll never enjoy again? I'm sorry, but he doesn't deserve anything at all. He doesn't truely deserve a life of pleasure, if he's allowed to live, he should see walls for the rest of his life. It's not the "nice" or "compassionate" thing to do to take pitty on a murderer or allow him to go free; it's simply the most irresponsible choice anyone could ever make.
