I was just wondering if a person that is not into doing drugs can consider themselves a hippie. I've seen several documentaries about hippies where they say that the drugs are part of the experience and the essence of being a hippie. Would like to know your opinion.
Hello there M'lady, I can't speak for everyone, so I'll share my thoughts on the matter... Hippie is a lifestyle and/or a way of thinking, it too can also be a label for those who put labels on things and people. If that was the can, then I'm a New Age, Metalhead, Gothic, Hippie, who also like classical music, and various others. I used to do drugs and drink, but now am very much sober and free of the burden from it. I love nature, hiking, camping, fishing, meditating, working with energy, and even video games. I forage the woods and field for wild plants and make things in the kitchen from them, I walk in a light rain and watch thunderstorms, and love all animals, my small garden is doing great... But does all this make me a hippie? I'm sure many here share my interests and would consider these things to be hippie-like, but being a hippie comes from the heart, not a label. And not all hippies do drugs, it was just popular stereotype created by those who feared anything outside themselves. If you think you're a hippie, or if being a hippie helps you be or become a better person, then more power to ya... then I say you are. Peace and love to ya, Spirit Wynd
i think being a hippie is all about perspective and experiences with the people around you. drugs may help you to become open-minded in regards to yourself as well as others. while drugs are often depicted in the "hippie scene" they are not required. short answer: be yourself. be accepting of others and their lifestyles. if you don't want to do drugs, don't do them. all are welcome in this place
My question is intended in a more general sense, not to determine whether I am hippie myself or not. Labels don't sit well with me. I absolutely agree that it all comes down to being yourself regardless of what others think. I too love meditation, nature, animals and environmental Science (mainly Ecology). peace to all.. :cheers2:
WHAT????i had to take drugs???? a lot of my long haired hippie friends were like me ...not into drugs ....booze was okay for me but drugs were not ,though i have no problems with anybody else taking drugs as long as they do no harm to others or themselves .....plus i'm a big supporter for the legalization of marijuana
Hippie is all about freedom and tolerance. Drugs should NOT to be associated with hippiedom as if it was all that mattered. Drug users found tolerance and joined in the movement. And good respectable hippies also use it, but the choice is indvidual. Do a lot of research before you take anythiing if you should decide you must.
Darn documentaries! Nah, don't believe anything you see on television about the 60s; most of it wasn't true even in the 60s. For my region, the essence of being a hippy meant that the person loved and cared for Nature and all living things more than the person cared about material possessions. And we had long hair, and we spent a lot of time in the country. Some people love their neighbor and are labeled Christians. Some people join Christianity but do not love their neighbor. Your heart is the only truth. Be yourself: it is the law of hippidom.
