Saw a pair of pileated woodpeckers involved in a courtship ritual in a southern bottomland forest. Then a very big one in strong, straight flight and white-underside of the wing but didn't have binoculars.

Heard a loud rap, rap-rap, rap, rap-rap, ect. and briefly saw an extremely large woodpecker rapidly flying away.

Are pileated woodpeckers endagered? We have several that live in our backyard. I know turkey's aren't endagered, every morning I've been seeing three hens and their two dozen or so babies.
