Be kind and help out a Shaggie. I need to make an eyelet like the one shown in the pic below. The inner diameter of the eyelet is 3/8 inch and the outer is 3/4 inch. It's a fairly large eyelet. Are there any tools readily available that can do this? I need to make only a couple of these. The material is a mix of rubber and cloth. It should be fairly easy to cut through. I just need an eyelet tool that can make them this size. Thanks. .
I stumbled onto Osborne Products. Apparently, large eyelets are referred to as grommets. Osborne makes grommet kits in a number of sizes including 3/8 ID. They have a kit that uses hand tools (punch, die, hammer) that are low cost for those who need to set only a few grommets. Their products can be found at various shops on the web. http://www.furniturerestorationtoolsandsupplies.com/servlet/the-1029/C-S-Osborne,-Osborne/Detail http://www.kingrichardco.com/grommet_and_snap_kits.htm .
There are more sophisticated setting tools such as presses. The cost of simple press pliers is usually $100 or more. Presses go for hundreds or thousands of dollars. Too much for me. .
Here's another way of setting snaps and grommets using dies attached to vise grip pliers. Pretty neat. Not too expensive. http://www.kingrichardco.com/ClinchFastSnapKit.htm .
