Yes you can. I might want to steal millions of pounds from a bank, but I'm banned from doing so. You might want to kill me, but you'd be banned from doing it. There are plenty of harmful activities that can be banned. Even much more benign and less extreme things can be banned. I quite like smoking weed. That's banned....
Yes ,you in fact can say anything is banned, but that doesn't mean people will respect a ban.People still get done what they want done.Sometimes consequences occur for their/our actions and sometimes not.Banks get robbed, people get killed and drugs get used.
I don't see why it should be banned. Who are we to tell others what to believe and what not to believe in? Sure, by all means feel free to heckle Scientologists, but they should not be banned from subscribing to these forms of belief.
You are not banned from doing so... you could do it if you got off your arse and attempted to go and steal millions of pounds. Muchlike if someone wanted to kill you...they are not banned from killing somebody, people kill others all of the time. It is more a case of you being deterred from doing so.
I think it should be banned. As someone that as been immersed in religion, some very hefty and haughty religions, and lived to tell the tale, I can say that Scientology is NOT a religion. I was raised Pentecost and Southern Baptist. I was told not to cut my hair. Not to wear trousers. Not to show any skin other than forearms and hands. Not to talk to certain people. Not to listen to certain music. Not to read certain books. Not to do this, that, or anything else. However, if I read Harry Potter, or cut my hair, or even wore trousers, I was welcomed back in with open arms. I never had two pennies to rub together, let alone tithe, but that didn't mean I was told I would never get into heaven. Yes, there are those that have corrupted what religion is, but the vast, vast majority really does have the very best intention: giving hope to those that need it most. There is no crime in dispensing hope. However, I have a very close friend that was raised a scientologist. Her family dynamic was so incredibly messed up, she has a hard time relating at all. Children get sick and I believe I've even heard of a few deaths due to the "formula" that Hubbard "picked up while in Roman times". You can't advance to the next level without paying. Some people never advance at all. They try to intimidate or level lawsuits against those that practice their rights to call them nutjobs. No Christian could do that. You are told to break ties with those that hold back your progress. Christianity only tells you to pray for the lost soul, not completely cut ties. Scientology is about isolation, extortion, brainwashing, and deprivation. They use privately taped confessions as black mail against those who might want to break away. It's pure and simple. There is no comparison to be drawn here, beyond a few basic characteristic that Hubbard adopted to his enterprise to keep the debate going. Ban Scientology.
Personally, I feel that any form of beliefs that you have to pay for fall into the "cult" category. We don't ban other cults, why should we ban this one? Nobody's telling you to subscribe, infact you have obviously made a choice not to, why should you be entitled to a choice and some other not?
Of course, we must ban whatever we do not understand and whatever we don't agree with. We just wouldn't be us otherwise, would we?
The only time a ban should come down is if the thing is harmful to people/animals other than an adult who has chosen to do it or to the environment (i have headache atm-may be more circumstances? Cant think of any atm though) While scientology like all religion type things can be harmful, its every adults choice to go into it. Some may get duped or sucked in when theyre vulnerable, which is awful of course. I also hate the thought of children being raised in a hardcore religious/cult environment. But thats an almost universal part of organised religion, you cant ban scientology for that alone I agree with what others said about the money. It shouldnt be allowed to come into it, and its clearly money-based, but then some other religions are too Like others though i dont know to much about it so i cant say i lot
It's not a crazy religion. It IS a cult. Would you have not called to ban the Jonestown cult that enslaved its people and forced men women and children to kill themselves? This cult is a little bit different, they prey on the rich and the stupid and suck them dry for cash. The entire philosophy of the thing is meant to give the Scientologist leaders more cash, and they use people's low self-esteem and confusion to do it. Not only that, but they have killed people who try to leave the cult, and infiltrated the US government so that they could get tax-free status that many real religions don't get. They operate with fear, suing people who talk against them until no one will speak up. If that's not evil, I don't know what is So? Just because Christians did it, it doesn't make it right. Would you condone the Holocaust because of the Spanish Inquisition? They seem somewhat similar except on different scales, and different goals, just like this Scientology thing is on a different scale and with different goals than St. Peter. Also, the Bible is not a literal document. That was probably a story to show people that it was wrong to be overly concerned about worldly possessions. Stupid, maybe. But we all know Peter didn't have magical powers.
I think it's a cult more than a religion, as in order to progress a person needs to have a lot of money- a lot of money that celebrities or rich people make. So Scientology is geared towards the elites and the money that the Church makes, as far as I know, doesn't go back to charitable organizations for the poor only to organizations that rich people or celebrities have founded. It's more like Aliaster Crowley's Golden Dawn, a secret society more than anything.
Ok, but then how do you control, unify etc people en masse? Bring on the anarchy and nihilism... Although I don't personally subscribe to any religion, I like to take philosophies from many different ones, and from other belief-systems such as magic and science, and merge them together to make beliefs that suit my own personal way of life. I don't feel that any forms of belief should be banned, it's all good and well saying one should do this or that, but nothing is ever black or white and perhaps you should seriously take into consideration the "grey" areas that will follow should you ban belief altogether.
