I just happened to be listening to Bob Dylan when I noticed this thread. I always listen to Dylan, he's great.
i dig dylan, but my mates don't. it is so nice listening to lyrics that actually mean something...not like that now...people say green day have good "protest" songs...american idiot v.s the times they are a changin...no chance! there is nobody really like dylan these days... peace
I have never liked a single thing I have heard from Mr Dylan Because of this thread I'm going to give him another shot.
Dylan blows my mind. The sound is great, and the lyrics are even greater. might get to see him live =D
Also a fan. Its good to see so many responding to this thread as well. I too find it a bit difficult to find some Dylan fans, but I live in the middle of nowhere so I guess that doesn't help
Although I am 30 now I have been listening to Dylan since I was in my teens. My mom was a big folkie and my dad was a rock n roller so I grew up listening to Dylan, Joan Baez, Taj Mahal, Richie Havens, Country Joe, Hendrix, Cream, etc. By the time I was in my 20s I was listening to more folk, both american and Irish, including Pete Seeger, The Chieftans, The Dubliners and Ramblin' Jack Elliot.
The only problem with being a teenage Bob Dylan fan, in my estimation, is the same problem as being a young fan of older music in general. When it's contextual -- when it meant something very important at the time it was written -- I think it's difficult for younger people to truly appreciate what the lyrics are saying. A lot of Dylan's early work was very political and inherent to the time in which it was written...my dad used to get irritated that I was SO into the music of his generation; he was concerned that I didn't "get" where the artists were coming from. On some level he was right -- I can't fathom living in the shadow of nuclear war, etc. But on the same token, guys like Dylan are also universal -- they speak to the human condition regardless of time period. Which is why we still love him today.
I love Bob Dylan, my name is Dylan (i'm not too sure if i was named after him or not ^^) and I find that your understandng of the music depends on the person. I find i can follow a lot of things he says, as I can with Neil Young (another of my all-time favourites). I'ts just a matter of looking into it. Ow and your not alone, I love him too. However, many of my peers do not also, so i wouldn't be too stressed, just realise that he is special. Peace.
Yeah I'm only 19 but I listen to dylan. Course most people think I'm weird for listening to the Grateful Dead soooo.
