It's better to wash often, otherwise the natural oils from your head prevent the hair from locking. When I started, I would just towel dry like regular, it just takes a LONG time to start. I had like 3 dreads for about a month. After a year though it finally looked like real dreads. It's the coolest thing to watch them start as these little wispy things and eventually become a full grown, gnarly dread.
I washed my dreads more often in the first month, and I found they got tighter but that could be that my hair type though. They looked a year old at 9 months
are you using Bronners or what kid of shampoo? I would say no more than twice a week, and make sure you rinse it ALL out. I was washing too often in the beginning with Bronners and wasn't washing it compeletely out, and it was leaving my hair oily...
when you are residing in a tropical country(e.g. Philippines) its very hard to not wash your hair as it gets itchy to overly itchy and im doing like, every 3-4 days(very hard to sustain) so sometimes, i end up washing it just over a day. im in my 2nd week now and im doing great, its gets all that matte now but i cant say its all knotted up but hey, its getting together now. haha. cool. i boiled Calamondin leaves today to wash it up and boiled lemongrass leaves to rinse it up smells great really and that lemongrass left a very funky good smell. love it. haha.
