I was wondering what the general percentage was of people that listen to rap on these forums.

Me being both a musician and an artist, I am usually very "un-lenient" when it comes to rap. Most rap artists take a prerecorded beat, usually sampled from other artists, and talk over it. It's almost a "just add water" type of industry to me. I try to stay away from it as much as I can.

I compare most rap artists to boy bands, they mostly had nothing to do with the composition of the music that they are making money from.

I do however, appreciate the artists that create; i mean they themselves create. I saw "What??'s" sig for Flobots and decided to check them out, which is what inspired this long rant-like post on the music industry.

I definitely enjoyed Flobots, and although I dislike the similar group, Gym Class Heroes, I have a lot of respect for them. I can't say the same for much of the other rappers in the mainstream right now.

Also, although I know a lot of pop and even rock artists do not compose or write the music they use, I am singling out rap because more often than not they do not have the express permissions to use the beats that they steal.

If it's rap from back in the old days then I atleast have respect for them for originality, todays rappers are a joke.

I dont listen to that shit anyway, I listen to real music.

Oh yeah, the founders of hip hop are nowhere on the same level as mainstream "rappers" today.

But I straight up hate rap, I'm a rock kinda guy.

Yeah, whenever I got to one of my friends house they always listen to rap. I hate being high and listening to shitty music, so one day I plugged my mp3 player into the stereo and blasted One by Metallica and his dad came downstairs and yelled "who the fuck knocked some sense into you and put on the good music?"

A momentous occasion. That one would go up on the calendar; "Today I knocked sense into my friends. That's what she said."

I absolutely hate rap, but I voted I respect the rappers, because well they are artists too, and they like what they do, and are good at it..

Rap and Electronic music are my favorite. I listen to a lot of underground rap because they don't take what is in mainstream music. Bone thugs n harmony is my favorite group.

I'm not a big fan of rap for the most part but there are those handful of guys who, even though they are rapping over recorded beats, have incredibly clever/creative lyrics that flow really well, and well I respect that.

Immortal Technique, Cannibal Ox, Atmosphere, and Brother Ali are some good rappers today.

Immortal Technique and Can-Ox are from Harlem.

there are some songs nowadays that i like but i think most of the rappers are a bunch of idiots (with the exception of a few that i like.) back in the day in the tupac/biggie era rap used to have meaning. now its all based on the same shit. put on your local rap station and try to count how many meaningful songs come on. every song is either about sex, drugs, going to a club, or killing someone. every once in awhile you'll catch some moron who'll put a little more creativity into it and he'll write a song about doing drugs in a club, fucking some girl in the back room, and then shooting someone on the way out.

I like some rap, like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. But I haven't heard much else aside from the general garbage of the radio.

I listen to a few artists, mostly underground but a few of the more mainstream guys. I listen to alot of hardcore and metalcore but for rap I'm really liking aesop rock right now who is an underground artist from NYC. Not that it matters but I'm just putting it out there that he is white.

Also check out immortal technique if you haven't heard of him.

Plus I know you like Immortal too. Though as of late Immortal has been wearing on me with just continuing to say the same things with the same anger and pretty similar beats. He still has a place in my heart though.

95% of rap is shit.. there are a few good songs and albums out there... most of it comin from the late 80s and early 90s... i prefer the old school gangsta rap though compared to this newer shit that talks about nothin but women and money... and they get paid thousands of dollars to repeat some shitty hook over and over again.... like right now.. im bumpin some Tical.. old school type shit right there...
