im all about some theatre =)

i first fell in love with acting, but seeing that i couldnt fit drama class into my scheduale, and with a million other places i had to be during most of the rehearsals it was kind of hard for me to be in musicals, plays, etc.

since the acting part didnt work out i basically just became a side techie and i LOVE it!
usually i just help set up props, design scenes, and i worked with makeup a little bit...
but i went to convention last year and learned alot about lighting so im sure i will be getting more into that too.....

    =)

yes, I was in a band and in charge of lighting and sound.
This is a sucky job exspecially if the band intends you to play and manage your own affairs.
    What is your question?

are you concidering Lighting with or w/o controls.
Chances are in small venues you have very little to work with. But some Canister lamps and a few controls.
When you get into larger venues. Computer operated programs for lighting are used.
Your familiarity with the Bands music is a plus.
You certainly wouldnt be using a bright color for a Blue Mood song, or bring up exciting flashes in a ballad. Unless your ballad has a ending that needs sparks.
Ive been thinking a long time to be a lighting and sound engineer.
But already a electrician. And the call and need for a technician isnt really that strong in the market. Imo. depends on where you live and your lust for being around all the noise, lights, stress and annoying venue owners.

orison319 - what exactly do you mean
Yes i am a freelance lampie and LX student.
    - Contrall wize - thats a importaint issue as you are probley aware lighting contrall is now computer contraled (via dmx). So contrall in most venues should have some ablitie to contrall the fixtures. E.g. dmx dimmers there for contrall can be done by your own contraler. (my prefrance in this situation would be laptop and interfaze or hire a desk).
    - Also in smaller venues if you don't hire in equipmnt (budget allowing), then the equipmnt allowed would be low there for you just have to be innovative. However in some rare situations house equipment could be un safe - answer leave the gig or get in alternative kit.
    -
    - computer operated lighting - dam right - I mean most higher end the software / desk will often be used to design lighting, plot cues, patch fixtures then operate the show and also used with AV to project images / graphicks.
Also in shows there will often be a lighting (LX) team who will be headed by the lighting desinger (LD), (who will need to know the bands tunes and design the lighting around it). The LX team will inculed tech's who rig and put the kit together and between or one of them would plot / program the show and then op it. The other crew could be involved with folowspotting or backstage worck worck during the show
    - i think there is a demand for techs but people manly go into the industry because they want to / like it to be hoist it is stress, long hours, and relativity low pay but on the pluss side - touring, booze (of course) and get to watch top notch gigs.

My advice - stick as a sparky but go for it if you want to.

Hope i have anwserd your questions.

yeah you sound< no pun intended.. Like you know your lighting..
Id rather play on the stage though..
you can get some cheap canisters and they have controls. But obviously a dive bar your talking some tracklighting and some 25w colors bulbs..
Like you said its good to be a little creative.
