finally have decided to pack a few things and jump on the next flight over. will be staying with extended family on the north island. bbut when i go down south i dont know... any ideas? halp me plz ^_^
I've been asking for info as well http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=287880 Unfortunately this forum is basically dead
hey! Places that I would hope you'd go to are Pukenui. Pukenui is right up north with amazing beaches and really good fishing spots. Wellington is amazing. ChristChurch is amazing also. There are many places in nz that are amazing but those three are my favourite! Hope it helps! Peace
I recently did the big tour of the south island, I went everywhere except Christchurch. It depends what your looking for- scenery or more touristy stuff. The funny thing is, by my estimate- only one fith of the south islands population are locals, and the rest are Americans and Germans. Anyway, personaly I liked the west coast.
thanks guys. any ideas on the best places to stay to save money. and what areas i should avoid... you know ... i dont want to go strolling into the wrong part of town...
Well I dont know what city you'll be in, but if its Auckland then South Auckland has a notorious reputation. Ive never been there so I dont know if its deserved or not. If you ever come to Christchurch we don't really have any no-go zones. There's a few rough suburbs, but you'd never go there unless you have a specific reason to visit them
Well I'm sure it's not even half as bad as what Ive heard Detroit is. I just looked the crime statistics up and in Auckland for 2007 there were six homicides, 1,307 minor assaults and 1,210 serious assaults. 8,647 burglaries, and 17,025 thefts. City's population is 1.3 million. Just did a google search of Detroit and in 2006 they had 418 murders, and 13,143 assaults, with 18,134 burglaries and 21,287 thefts. Wikipedia says population is 918,000. So yeah, Detroit seems a lot more dangerous. But I think with every city if you go to the wrong area or bump into the wrong person there'll be trouble. Anyway, this is going way off-topic, sorry
-moonshine-memi-, i would DEFINATELY reccommend going to Milford Sound which is in the south island. it is the most beautiful place. As for where to stay, you probarbly wont like this option if you are alone, but if you have someone to go with camping here is amazing!
thank you spirit awakening. i hear milford sound is amazing. thanks for your info. i may try and get my cousin to go camping with me XD i am also thinking of going to one of the glaciers... any hints with respect to them?
Unfortunately i haven't been able to visit the glaciers yet. but im sure that whichever one you go to will be beautiful.
Detroit is also a port city on the border of another country. All border cities have high crime rates and such.
True but in the case of Detroit I don't think it has much to do with that nowadays. Windsor is the Canadian border town across the bridge and it's crime rate is no where in the ballpark as bad as Detroits.
Hey not sure if you're still looking for replies but I have spent some time in Auckland and yeah there are definitely some nasty bits. Like Arlandis said it's not as bad as Detroit, but a general basis is just to avoid South Auckland, especially as a traveller. And especially at night. Generally though if you stick to lit areas and crowded places you should be fine. Every city with a decent population will have violent areas, it's just human nature. Anyway, the main thing you have to watch out for is the shitty lay-out of the city, the city planner should be shot. Have fun driving around it, it'll make YOU want to kill someone.
Hi ya, hanmer springs is an amazing spot to go to, they have wicked hotspring and fantastic snowing, cheap horse riding, bush walks, and adventure activities like bungy jumping and jet boating, the scenery is spectacular! Also picton is a really neat town at the top of the south island, it has a neat crafty, alternative vibe and has some really fantastic bush walks and stuff nestled in the hills around there. If you can check out kaikoura, it has really neat whale and dolphin watching, cool kayak trips and you can even stop along the side of the road and get up close with seals (we nearly stood on a massive male because we thought it was a rock until he stuck his head up and stared us down lol) and i think there are a few cheap backpackers in those areas too. South islanders (i think) are generally more friendlier and while you are travelling they will give you heaps of cool tips and advice of neat, out of the way experiences which will make the travelling all the more fun! good luck and have a great time!
