This may sound odd, but I expect to be "living" out of a small van for about three days a week every week at the start of next year on my own. I will really only be sleeping in it, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest where the best places to park/camp would be, not specifically (I will be in Tasmania, Australia) but just generally? Do you think national forests would be the best bet, or can you think of better places? Caravan parks? And do you think it is safer to camp somewhere alone, or in the presence of other campers/vehicles? I'll be doing this out of necessity, but I am glad to do it in any case, and though I would far rather be in a natural/wilderness setting than in a park, I'll go with whatever is most sensible for the time being. If you have any advice or if you have ever done anything similar I would be extremely appreciative! Forgive me if this is a dumb question, and thank you if you've read this far. :blush5:

I'm sure you can make things work, specially if it's only a few days a week.

How cold does it get in Tasmania?

I would say if your going to live in a van it's best to do it down by the river

Well I've seen people living out of vehicles in state forests here in the US I'd imagine something like that or a national forest would be one of your best bets.

Thanks olddog for the link. :) And Sonik, it gets very cold in Tasmania by Australia's standards! :D I guess the climate is more similar to what one gets in the UK, whereas mainland Australia experiences extremely hot summers in some parts and the winters are as mild as anything, at least where I come from originally they are. Anyhow, thanks again everyone.

I guess since you're apparently close to national forests/parks etc that would be more optimal. However, whenever we're on the road and need a quick place to get in a good nights rest we stop at a Walmart. They allow RV's/Vans and such to stay overnight in their parking lots. I hate Walmart myself but they're just too damn convenient. They;re open 24/7 so you have access to anything you would need, and some of them actually have showers and such in their restrooms. A lot of truck stops are the same deal. both of those are more for traveling and living on the road, following bands, or touring, but keep them in mind if you ever need to. Also, I'd always choose to camp with others than alone, most people are very courteous and willing to help. If you ever need anything, don't be afraid to ask and odds are folks are more than happy to help somebody out.
