this is no two bit college paper, this was a proper fair test by the times paper in England, one of the most respected media organisations in the world. when pitted in a real world trial, the prius is less fuel efficient than a BMW 5 series executive saloon. the hybrid technology in the prius doesn't work, and there is a wealth of cheaper cleaner conventional cars on sale that can comfortably out green the prius. its also worth noting that the prius has only 1/3 the service life of the BMW, so considering 80% of a cars pollution is in manufacture, 3 priuses have to be made for every 520d - the overall carbon footpring for the prius is pretty rubbish for all the hype. http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/driving/used_car_reviews/article3552994.ece wanna have clean motoring? buy a Fiat Panda turbo diesel, considerably better MPG than the prius, no nasty chemicals in the batteries to dispose of, and cheaper and cleaner to make..
Yes, a great source of pollution we often forget when we think of cars is the fabrication of steel wich takes lots of coal wich is actually burned from the brazilian forests...
Hit the A/C button on my buddies Prius and he practically gets the same mileage I get in my Jeep Patriot. Add another person and some luggage and he wonders why exactly he bought it. He has an older one. First or second year release tho. Hopefully they have improved.
It's definitely possible to produce cars that are more fuel efficient than the Prius, and in fact such cars exist, but none but a handful of people buy them. The average car here in the US gets 20 mpg. A Prius will easily get you 40 mpg if not 45 or even 50 mpg. That is significantly better than what we are doing now--we'd cut our fuel needs in half. I know a couple of folks with Prius' and they all like them a lot--no problems to date (they're a few years old). If a person is considering a Prius vs. a more fuel efficient car, I'd hope they'd go for the more fuel efficient car. For people considering something in the range of 10-30 mpg vs. a Prius, I'd hope they go with the Prius. Chris
that comparison is a joke. they run the majority on open highway where the prius "hybrid" function isnt even factored in. its just a regular gasoline engine car at that point.
A diesel vehicle of the same size of the Prius will kick it's ass in MPG. Hell, a small diesel SUV will almost beat the Prius in mpg. You just don't get to enjoy the smell of your own farts.
charcoal is made from wood, and not extensively used to make steel. coke, which is used to make steel, is made from coal you dig up.
Haha that's kind of funny. I think I saw the T.V commercial about that car the had it in pristine mountains then it degraded into sticks and leaves and turned into the soil and grew flowers. They were saying something about eco friendly and green. What bullshit…! A car metal and plastic that burns oil like that is “green”. I think this is a picture from the commercial.
It's a bit of a iffy one to compare, it's the most well known hybrid, but it's also the worst. A recent calculation showed that, when you factor in the building of it, the prius does more environmental damage than your average Land Rover. (battery creation, shipping etc)
Most of the steel used now has been recycled. My company sends about 100 tons a week off to the recycler.
"To find out we set a challenge: to drive a Prius to Geneva using motorways and town driving. The direct route is 460 miles but we drove almost 100 miles further to give the Prius the advantage of running in urban conditions where its petrol-electric drivetrain comes into its own." You must be reading a different article... I've heard the same thing about it when compared to the Hummer...
