I'm white and my hair is about 4 - 4.5 inches long, but it is very fine. I washed my hair with shampoo that leaves no residue and I blow dried it , in an attempt to make it more frizzy, but my hair is just fine, straight and long but curls at the end, it also gets oily after a day or two. I can't even get them to lock a bit after I have totally dried my hair out after washing it. I back comb it and it may look like I'm doing something, but right when I stop my hair goes back to how it was and I have no problem running the very fine comb through my hair, berly any knots if any. I tried for about 20 minutes on just one drad and It looked like I was getting no progress. Im wondering if it may just be impossible for me to get dreads? Please any tips or help would be very appreciated, I'm really wanting dreads and I'm ready for all the time and care it is going to take
I'm not going to do the natural dread method, because I'm more than sure my school wont accept how they look while they are forming, but I think if I use the back combing method they will lock quicker and then be more accepted. If I was to wash my hair once a week then my hair will be VERY oily. Any tips or help on getting my dreads started using the back combing method?
I personally don't blow dry my hair and I do not know how significantly it is affecting the dreading process, but what I would recommend is to ditch the blow dryer and wait for your hair to air dry after each shower. The next part you might not like, but I would wait a bit longer till your hair is 6 inches or so, and that way when you back comb them, there will be a lot more knots and it will hold in longer. Other than that, wash your hair once a week and you should be golden
I pretty much totally agree with detunedradio. As far as backcombing goes, I think you might have better luck if you did wait until your hair was a bit longer. Make sure your shampoo is a good one. Also, know that even if you backcomb, your hair is still going to go through the messy phase. Dreads are a journey.
use something like bronners just cause whatever ya use says no resedue doesnt mean its the best thimng for ya if u wash and 2 days lsater your oily whatever ya are washing with is most likely causing it do the deep cleanse to removce all oi;ly buildup it will make your hair extra sodft tho... thenj use bronners ..u dont gotta fggo a week but hold off on washing for as close to a week as you can, over washimng encourafes extra oil production backcombing is an unnessacasry step, but givedss the illudsion of progress when ya backcomb they will be lelicate anbd easy to take apart.. chances are your not backcombing well enough at all to hold together, if yoiuy want to start off with it that shoer, you can just add a few beads and let iut do its thing and that wquekins the natural process or ya can get help backcombing better id use a spray of sea salt and lemon juice in warter (noyt too strong on either a spray bottle wityh t eblspoons each should do good that will help dry out the oiliness and aftrer a few weekjs u should stop producing as much the schopl cannot make u comb your hair if yuou dont own a comb if u really want to backcomb or jumpstart it u may wanna concider twist n roiop over backcombing , either way lil help wouldf be good and keep in mind eoither way to be effective will be painful
My hair did stoped becoming oily with sea salt and lemon and residue less shampoo, backcombing won't make your hair knot faster I think, and when I blow dry my hair it tends to untangle so just dry it with a towel and wait a bit after it get dry. Wool hat helps a lot, didnt had one for 2 weeks and my hair wont knot a lot and now its a lot better
i can't offer advice, but i can offer encouragement; my hair is thick and fine and refuses tangles very easily... i'm just washing it with bronners and letting it air dry and do its thing i pull it back in a bandanna every day for work, but everywhere else i keep it under a wool hat or just let it fly around free. good luck!
Muffinan0, I have very fine hair as well, that gets oily in a day or two. I used to brush my hair about twice a year, as it rarely would knot. I backcombed and put elastics in - kept them for about 3 weeks. I also put in some wax (which I wish I never did). When I washed my hair in the beginning, I put up my dreadlings in hairbands and only rubbed my scalp a little with shampoo, then sprayed with saltwater afterwards, letting it dry in the sun. It worked fine with me. I couldn't go for a week without washing, but have managed cutting down from every 2nd day to every 4th or 5th day. Mind you, your hair will look nice the first couple of days after backcombing, but will look pretty messy after a few nights sleep and washings. But maybe not too bad. Now they are kind of crazy and loopy. Good luck!
Siggh seems to be the only one who has a hair type in common with me, its not that it didnt want to hold when i back combed it, its that it never even held in the first place, like siggh said, he brushes his hair 2 times a year, I haven't picked up a brush in 5 but my hair is still straight. I'm going to try again but I will let it air dry.
maybe you should help your hair a little by rubbing it on your head after washing or just when you feel like?
i had the straightest, heaviest hair in the world. i went a whole year without combing and i managed to get three dreads in the nape area and thats all. i finally gave up and got a dread perm. a hairstylist backcombs your hair into the locks you want (thin thick etc) and then they wrap it in perm rods and throw that nasty ass chemical on it to melt the hair into a dread. when you are done, you have dreads. its instant. the thing is you have to continue to take care of them (palmrolling) to insure they are happy. you also have to follow all the tips everyone here gives you, esp. NO WAX and bronners all the way. if you decide to go the perm route, make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing. if anyone talks about wax, SAY NO. my dreads started with a perm 2 years ago at about 6 inches in length and are now long and beautiful. i wish i could have done it naturally, but my hair wasnt having it. dont let anyone tell you that that is not the "real" way to get dreads. all my friends with homegrown dreads have no issues with the way i started mine. good luck
(I am a "she" not a "he" ) Muffinan0 - I washed my hair with dreadheadhq-shampoo that dried out my hair somewhat and made it better to backcomb. I can't use that shampoo anymore cause it completely dried out my hair and scalp on the second wash. Use some salt/lemon-spray as well, after you wash your hair - that should help. Just be careful not to make it too strong, or it might dry out your hair too much. I also think that A LITTLE wax helped my locks stay in place for the first couple of weeks. Too much wax just made a mess...
Thanks for all the help guys, i'm going to give it another shot in a day or two. Sorry siggh, didn't know you were a girl
Hmmm wait a litl more and then backcomb at least 6-7 inch u dont want to go natural cuz of ur school no matter what they will be mess for a bit so quit ur school
Quit my school? Yea I'm not a high school drop out so sorry that has to be the stupidest advice I have gotten so far, I have already changed schools twice in the past 2 years so Im not ready to change again. Im looking for actual back combing advice and dreading advice not life decisions, thanks though.
