I've heard that "Der Untergang" had first performance in Germany yesterday. I hope it will soon be in danish cinemas, so I can go watch it. In case any of you germans (other nationalities also, ofcourse) in the forum has already seen the film, what's your opinion about it then?

I feel the same way, Moony. :)
Finally the germans really manage to confront their biggest historical taboo. "Der Untergang" has been critizised to focus too much at Hitler as a person, and forget to explain how the german people could support this madness. I don't think that's a problem at all. It's just even more interesting to make such an unusually perspective on the situation in Berlin in 1945.

I want to see it, before I'll judge. Apparently I think it's an interesting project to focus on the person Hitlers very last days in his lonely shelter, totally isolated from the horrors taking place outside. I hope this inside isolation will be described in relation to the decay and nihilism taking place outside the shelter. That perspective haven't been carried out before.

And, yeah, I can't wait to see it as well! :)

I just hope, it won't be too, critical, or take a side... I'm not clear, I know, what I mean, is , I hope it will take an outside view. Not trying to make Hitler the mean mean mean dictator, or the poor old person... see what I mean?

oh, I'll just keep fingers crossed .....

Yes, I know what you mean, moonydancer.
I don't think there is a reason to be afraid of that. I think it's a very serious and objectiv describing movie, but the perspective is on the person "Hitler" and his close surroundings, and not at the german society as whole. That's the only thing "Der Untergang" has been criticized for. (cuz the nazi-regime was just as much a result of the conservative culture in Germany, than it was Hitlers construction alone).
The movie only takes places in the shelter, but I hope the movie will show how the living of those VIPs in the shelter reflects what's going on outside the shelter. I hope that "Der Untergang" takes in a social-psychological perspective (just like it's done in "Apocalypse now - redux" [that is among my top-3 favorite-films, perhaps #1, actually]).

But let us see the film soon, so we can judge it ourselves. :)

I'll go there next week with my history classe :) I've heard it is a very good film, and there has been a lot of discussion about it in German newspapers because it shows Hitler very personally. But don't be afraid, he won't be a hero ;) The actor, Bruno Ganz, did very very very good work I heard. But as you said, lets see it and then judge ourselves ;)

btw.: I didn't know it has the German title "Der Untergang" in other countries...

No, it didn't keep the same name in france, I don't remember the french name though...........................................................

But almost everybody knows it under the original name :)

I think it's good for this film to be out in theaters, not only in germany, but in the europe, and the rest of the world, not only will it help the germans with their past history, but also the people of other countries, who are so narrow minded :$ !!

That's right... Bruno Ganz is the name of the actor, and he both looks and sounds like Hitler. An almost perfect imitation. I've seen a few cuts from the film.
No, we know that he wont be represented as a hero. But he wont be represented as pure evil as well, but rather as a human, I expect? I understand moonydancers wish; if he was represented just as pure "evil", the film wouldn't explain anything about the person.

I hope you will tell about the film on the forum, after you've seen it with your class, Flowerian. :) (I have been posting too many images in the post... yeah, why not?)

    love,
    noose. :)

Well of course he is shown as a person, not as the evil itself. That's the main aim of the film ;) And this was subject of the discussion before the film came out: Would it be so much personally that the cinema visitor could understand Hitlers behaviour and even symphathize with him? The answer is no. Hitler is shown very close, as a person, but there is no fraternization with him.

I have seen the movie yesterday and I just can recommend to visit it. It`s no easy stuff but you should have seen it.

Bruno Ganz made good work. Sometimes I was just sitting down and couldn`t believe how realistic everything was. I felt some kind of nausea.

I think the film shows human beings. And it is sad, how human beings can be!

Sounds like a good analysis, Flowerian. :) -I will see it soon.
I was reflecting over your reply, and right now I'm philosophizing if that means, that the true theme in "Der Untergang" is about to put a mirror in front of the audience, to make them see who's the real cause of fascism? -anyway, I must see it, so I can speak and understand! ;)

p.s. and your analysis, Heaven, just makes me even more curious to see the film! :)

I think that what speaks the most for this film is the fact that it is German-made. Too many "look what they did over there in Germany" kind of films have been made in the past, including one that was shown on tv here recently, "Hitler - The Rise of Evil" (the title says it all, doesn't it?) with that guy from The Full Monty as Hitler. I'm very eager to see this film, for all the reasons you have already mentioned. Also, in November, there's another taboo-breaking film coming out; Volker Schlöndorff's "Der neunte Tag" - allegedly for the first time in German filmmaking showing scenes from a concentration camp. Any thoughts on this one?

Hm, I don't liked it very much... One should not forget that it is mostly a fictional film.

And Germans really don't need a film like that to be confronted with a part of German history.

I watched it yesterday and the only thing I can say is: WOW! One of the most impressive films I ever saw in my life. Excellent actors, and Bruno Ganz is playing in another dimension. The first time you see him he enters a room, stops and watches the people in the room. He doesn't really do anything but just watching, and this simple aciton causes a feeling of cold shower over your back. And when he speaks... I don't know if this can be transported very well in other languages - I can't describe it, it is so... fascinating (not in a positive way!)... And it is really really impressive to see him as a person - he is quite nice to the people aroudn him (especially women), you don't sympathize with him, but you see: He wasn't some strange kind of evil, he was a person. At the end, he's only an old man, completly mad, moving around armies which no longer exist. And all the generals around him aren't able to say "No, my Führer, this attack failed.. there are no more troops"... They just stand around very uncomfortably, looking at each other, but can't talk...
And it is not true that it is pure fiction: The film is mainly based on the memories of Traudl Junge (played by Alexandra Maria Lara, a great actress. She'll become a superstar, I'm sure.) and other survivors of those days.

It's unbelievable... The danish premier is at fucking spring!!!
Why does it takes so long, while any stupid Hollywood-movie usually premier in danish cinemas a few weeks after!?
