ok firstly a bit of history, in september 2007, i decided i wanted dreads, My hair is naturally curly and was just about shoulder length, so i bought a dread head kit and got a friend to back comb it, 10 hours later i had something resembling dreads...however within a few weeks the process of washing and waxing etc etc was getitng tedious, plus my efforts seemed to be in vain. So I went online and found a lady in london who does dreads, so off i went to london and got my dreads done with what i now know as the crochet method. They looked awesome, and were much better than the backcombing effort. As you can see by my sig pic. Its now been about 7 months since that moment, in that time i discovered this site, and have since then followed the advice, and have literally washed my dreads with the deep cleanse and dr bronners, but done no maintenance. heres a few pics: I wish I had seen this forum sooner, plus I wish I had gone for the natural method, but hey whats done is done. but yeah now you know the story, here are the questions: 1 firstly what do you guys and gals think of my dreads? 2 Do you think they will look more natural with time? 3 Im thinking of dying some of them, any ideas how to get them green and purple? 4 Im also thinking of adding beads or wraps, but dont have a clue how... sorry for the long thread, its all stuff i've wanted to ask about for ages, thanks for patiently reading through, and thanks for any advice Phil
1 firstly what do you guys and gals think of my dreads? they look good for only a few months! 2 Do you think they will look more natural with time? ehm I don't know, they'll never look natural like natural locks, but if you just let 'm go do what they want maybe some loose hair will make new dreads which makes a more natural look? 3 Im thinking of dying some of them, any ideas how to get them green and purple? You have to decolour them first with peroxide orsomething and then buy the colours you want. You can also make some dreadwraps with nice colours if you don't want it to be so permanent. 4 Im also thinking of adding beads or wraps, but dont have a clue how... You can wrap 'm with all kinds of stuff, wool, hemp, fabrics etc. You just get some beads and put 'm around your dreads.
i think they look good and will only get better.. as for the beads and wraps. its as simple as buying a bead or a little band or picking something off the ground and sticking it on your dread like a ring. if its too big then you could put it around two dreads. if it's too small... well then there is not much you can do except try to squeeze it on. anyway, they look great.
beads take a loop of thread thru the bead put dread end thru lioop pull loop with dread thru bead force up till it sticks the umm weird curl ..hook like at the ends of em maybe a sign theyre still lil stiff with wax? did u usereally hot water to melt it out? they look good but yea world peace is right to get more natural lokk just keep letting em do theyre thing but keep seperating and as new babies form naturaly vbetween them they'll start lookingg lil more natural..or well semi natural peroxide can be used to bleach but so can good ol lemon juice soak the dread in lemmon juivce and blow dry repeat till light enough then wash out 1 person here used unswweeetened kool aid mix with lil water to dye hers might not hold color long tho
oh wraps theres 2 types speed wraps which are basicly just wrapping around and can unravel quiclkly then therres a makromet knotted type thats much fancier and lasts longer but takes more skill and time
nah they arent stff with wax, they have been wax free for nigh on 7 and a bit months, i think its just the way they are
I've dyed mine multiple times. My latest was black and red. Just pick your hair dye and make sure to coat the dread thoroughly. I find they feel a lot better and look a lot better afterwards.
wooo they look great! i can't answer many of your other questions because i know FA about the process, but you look quite fine brother! just my two cents
1 They are looking very sweet bro! I dig the thickness of them. 2 I do know for a fact that if you decide to grow it out longer, they will look pretty sick, but as for the more natural look, I wouldn't worry about it, because they are sectioned out very nicely and length will make it kick ass. 3 Depending on the type of band you're in, if you are more heavy, I would suggest a darker dreads (dark brown/black) and some platinum blonde tips/highlights. 4 I wouldnt know either, I'd get help from a friend and look through youtube. I would prefer using wraps over beads, because I think they will help with some of the hair sticking out of your dreads. Have a good one man Hope I helped.
they look pretty good... really uniform. how much did you pay the lady in london? are you happy with the fact that you paid/are you happy with your dreads? they do look good man... but they kinda look like theirs still wax. i did the dreadhead thing too and thought all the wax was out... but once in a while i can still feel wax in there.
I paid her about £60, and im happy i aid because it kind of predefined the sections, and i reckon over time they will take on a more natural look which will be cool. As i said before there isnt any wax at all, its been at least 7 months since any wax, aint no candles here
hey man... kinda off topic but what kinda music does your band play? oh and can you put up a link to the myspace or website if there is any? thanks man!
my band play a verison of metal, not sure which really, we have some southern style songs, and some more up tempo stuff, we have a myspace but the songs are incomplete and poor quality, we need a recording session! I'll PM you our myspace address anyway
hey soaringeagle, is it ok to just get lemon juice from the store? I have some that is lemon juice from concentrate, and is it as simple as just applying some lemon juice to the dread and holding it under a hair dryer?
