We record it because it happens We record births and deaths We record marriages and we record assaults We record ourselves on video and watch it later sometimes I am recording the phrase “We record” and pasting it each time I need to use it We record birthday parties We record natural disasters and we record the casualties We record the survivors We record the number of teeth in our mouthes at regular intervals throughout our childhoods We record the number of bacteria in samples of our excreta when we are ill and add those numbers to our permanent files We don't record the fact the permanent file outlives us They record television programs and We record the program when it airs to watch at a later time and then sometimes we watch it We record the inner workings of small town municipal councils and store them away We record the score We record dissent We record messages on our answering machines in hope of receiving calls when we are not around to accept them because it makes us feel needed We record the names of the prime ministers We record the terrible things we can do one another and then We record ourselves pretending to do those things as a form of entertainment We record ourselves arguing the perversity of that We record groups of us fucking and then We record how much we made selling others a chance to see the recordings We record our loves We keep records of all these things because we have to because we are quite sure these things really happened but we record them anyway because a small part of us always doubts the world is something that's actually happening out there and in spite of us these things, these recordings are memory made solid and even if no one watches or reads them they exist and that's proof enough.
The entire piece made me smile, it has such a cynical tone throughout. [We record the terrible things we can do one another] I think you're missing a "to" in there. I thought that maybe the repetition of "we record" would get to be too much, but it actually worked well, you had good pauses and it all fit well.
