i heard an interview with the director of the movie, on the science friday radio show on npr (national public radio.) being that the interview was on a radio science program, tends to give the movie one hell of alot of weight, that it will be between very good to great sci-fi. this movie (the happening.) is an "the earth strikes back" movie. it opens in theaters on june 13th. anyone know some more about this movie?

I know someone that saw that movie. She said it was one of the worst pieces of junk put on film.--Cinema is at an all time low now when someone like M Knight 'Whatshisname can be considered some kind of a talent--If someone wants to 'waste 2 hours of time- then see it.Pt Barnum said "theres a sucker born every minute."

OK, here's my take on this movie. I usually do my own, personal take on movies I watch and will start posting those reviews on this site.

As already stated in this thread (no need for spoilers now) it is an earth strikes back kinda flick, in the realm of Hitchcock's The Birds - but no comparison. It isn't that good of a flick, but passable for a cheap matinee, which is the only time I go to the movies. The ending was really lacking. Shyamalan is not the new Hitchcock by any stretch and hasn't mastered the "Hitchcock ending," as we called it in the '60s.

    The Happening

I went to see this movie because the trailers looked interesting. You know, the scenes of people just shutting down and committing suicide in droves, such as stepping off of hi-rise buildings under construction. It starts in Central Park but eventually moves to the streets of the city. What is causing this happening is a mystery.

    It Starts in the Parks

Philadelphia high school science teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) is interrupted in his class and told the school is closing as a precaution against a possible terrorist attack. It is believed that the rash of suicides in New York was caused by some kind of neurotoxin that causes our self-preservation instincts to shut down. Elliot and wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel), their friend Julian (John Leguizamo) and his daughter Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez) grab a commuter train out of town.

From bits of news broadcasts we can follow the theories and reports of contamination and soon the maps are dotted all over the northeastern states. The commuter train stops in nowhere Pennsylvania as the infrastructure crumbles and people are stranded to survive on their own against an unknown killer. Our four protagonists start out on a trek to who knows where and encounter tense moments, suspense and false turns as they are slowly being cornered into no where else to go.

    I See Dead People

You don't need a sixth sense to know that I see dead people in the village. I can't really tell you anything more about this movie because, well, it's one of those movies. I have looked at some reviews that I think tell too much about the nature of the happening, which would ruin the unfolding of it for you.

This is not Shyamalan's worst flick (Lady in the Water) nor his best (The Sixth Sense) but it is mostly being panned by reviewers. The premise is interesting and Wahlberg makes a convincing everyday guy thrown into an apocalyptic moment out of his comprehension. He applies the scientific method to an abstract nature and comes up as unknowing as the weird and overwhelmed people around him.

This is an R rated movie because of violence and it is unnerving watching people calmly off themselves in the most gruesome ways, from splatting down from hi-rises, to stabbing themselves in the neck or passing around pistols until the bullets are gone. Much of the violence is off camera - but much of the carnage we see.

Apparently production fotos must be PG rated because in the movie this dead cop had little spurts of blood coming out of that small, colorless dent in his forehead with a thick pool forming around his head.

Good review, Shale! did you know we now have a movie review section? You could copy & paste it there. I know it's weird now with a movie forum and a review section... But the review section is better suited as ppl can rate the movie.

don't know what to do about forums that have the same content yet...

I'd like to tie the review section into this one, but I'll have to come up with the code.

basically all you need to do is watch the village and then you'll never have to worry about needing to go see another shayamalan flick

that movie will almost make you never want to pay to see ANY movie ever

god damn that movie was terrible

the only thing that even remotely piqued my interest in this movie is that 2 years ago i wrote a short story about people unexpectedly and w/o clear reason committing suicide

and then i saw the trailer for this movie and my immediate reaction was "wait....wait.....what?"
