dude , me and this chick were going to get into a fight and as an insult to me, she called me a tree hugging earth loving hippy...
I said thank you. anyone that would give that kind of compliment as an insult is about stupid and they deserve to be eaten by a plant!

Yeah but you got it backwards man. Hippies are still considered dirty to some people.

By you saying thatk you all you did was prove her point even more. Now I'm not saying I don't like hippies (they seem cool) but the whole loving earth thing just doesnt interest me.

I just want to know, who are we supposed to saving the earth for? Isn't it for ourselves (humanity)? And if so, what is the logic in living a miserable life in order to, supposedly, make our lives better?

Were saving the Earth for the sake of the Earth. Its not all about us humans. Its like a jigsaw puzzle, each peice by its self is worthless, but put them all together and its beautiful. We gotta work to make sure the Earth has its harmony in balance, with the ecosystems of the plants and animals, and the resources.

You should've just smacked her in the face and called her a fat **** rather than pussy around calling each other names.

I don't believe that humans should give up their rights to save plants and animals. I don't agree with the destruction of nature at all, but it is unavoidable to a certain extent. We can't just be forcibly deindustrialized at this point.

It's not a RIGHT, it's a PRIVILEDGE we gave ourselves because we had the tools to do so.

indeed, its the harmony between all the ecosystems that needs to be secured, but the thing is that if the harmony of the earth's ecosystems gets destroyed we will go down. there are people around who think we will be able to survive on mars, get a life i'd say.

do you remember the dinosaurs? and what happened when they were gone? other species took their place in the food chain, new species developed. this will happen again, but not for us, we will be the dinosaurs of that age. so we actually are saving the planet for ourselves as well

I guess the glaring contradiction in that sentence escapes you.

Our ability to sit idle in our waste and watch ourselves, other species and the environment all start crashing down amazes me.

Respect for one's self begins with respect for one's environment.

Your ability to do that greatly depends on whether you believe there's a serious problem or not.

I heard an analogy once that the earth was a space ship, and all the organisms were the nuts, bolts, and rivets holding it together, relying on each other for support. Now the ship will be fine without a couple of rivets, maybe even a hundred, but just how many can you take out before it falls apart? You only know when you get there.

I live in Western NY; the water and air is polluted to a point where I can literally smell the difference of air quality when I go up to the French river. We cannot eat fish out of many bodies of water due to the shit we dumped in there. We have one of the highest multiple sclerosis rates in the country. Two communities nearby me are being reviewed due to air quality concerns, the story is here. I can see that there is a serious problem where I live. The problem may not be immediatley apparent where you live, but it is where I do... That's for sure.
