The best way to keep a mother with limited space is to LST. (low stress training.) Once the plant has grown a little and the stem is thickening, bend the plant gently sideways and tie a piece of plastic coated wire around the top and tie the other end to the pot. (a hole drilled in works nicely.) This exposes lower stems to light and increases their growth. You can keep the plant like this for a while, then let it go--or keep tying it down as it grows to keep it compact.
You can 'top' your plant to keep height down but it will probably cause more vertical growth than a 2'x2'x2' space could handle.
LST is probably the way you want to go, and there are many methods to doing it. You can google "Cannabis" and "LST" and browse through the entries to find which one will serve you best.

    Good luck,
