well i've decided that i finally want to get some dreads. i was never really into them in the beginning but after attending a hip hop dance event and seeing one of the dancers with some, i've been hooked. i just think that they look great. i know this might seem kinda the opposite of what the ppl on here want but I was wondering what the best method for me would be to obtain some nice 'uniform' medium sized dreads. the best examples i can give are probably john butler's or jason castro (dude from american idol). i was thinking about back-combing then waiting a few weeks to wash my hair and then just going on from there but im not really sure if that's the 'correct' way to go about doing it to get the type of dreads im interested in...
dunno who those ppl are dont care you should want dreads like..well..yours dreads arent aboiut imitating others or trying toi fit a lkook theyre abiout not caring abiutr such lame things uniform dreads look fakle dreads arent suposed to be unifoem each and every dread should be unique like a fingerprint or snowflake so a collection of individual unique dreads make your dreads all your own, like noone elses look around at threads here, no 2 peoples dreasd look slike or even simular because dreads first off are deeply personal and uniqure to the individual and dreads have a mind of theyre own what u intend will not be what u receive if you want the illusiuon of control; sure backcomb palm roll do whatever makes you believe your in contrrol of the proccess but in the end the process takes control and 1000000 hours of work wont prevent the dreads from seeking to be unique so...why bother? in the end they will do what they wanna do
to be honest, although I agree that dreads are unique and beautiful and shouldn't be a copy of someone else's... I think if the bloke asks a question he should get an answer, not a lecture. so. if you want uniform, medium sized dreads, by backcombing, backcomb square sections about 1x1 inch. you can keep them tidy by palm rolling, crocheting, and all the methods listed on sites for "making dreads". it's 100% your choice, whether you make them or let them grow and how you go about doing that, and whatever decision you make, I wish you lots of joy in the journey. peace
ah well thiose sites also suggest wax n gels n lotsda crap steer clear of those also..crochetting bad idea what is crochetting? its poking holes through your dreads to pull hairs in.. when u poke a hole thru your tearring throiugh many hairs each time, wweakkening the dread, over time the dreads perforated basicly, and can be broken off easily if you want strong dreads that last, dont go poking holes through them i have lost 6 inches to 2 feet off a few dreads from weak spots (not from poking holes in them but from wrapping around axels or dragging on ground or repeatedly getting caught in car doors n such) but they always break at that weak poinbt near theend where they took wear dammage already.. crochetting makes weak spots the entire length if the dread.. excessive palm rolling also can weaken dreads how oftemn u want to poalm roll? hours a dfay every day for years and years? only so you can look like some celebrity noone cares about? whats the point in that?
I know that you've gone natural soaringeagle, and your dreads are beautiful. but some people aren't looking for what you have, and I crocheted my dreads, and had them for 10 months, they weren't weak, they were strong and took me forever to get out.
i understand where you're coming from and i agree that dreads should be unique and have some meaning but from my perspective i think that just having dreadlocks is unique in itself. i'm not trying to imitate anyone else but those names were just thrown out as examples and ideas of what I was looking for but I didn't necessarily mean I wanted mine to be identical to them. all in all, it was probably bad phrasing on my part and I should've made it more clearer so i apologize in advance. thanks for the replies though guys :cheers2:
hey my name is aaron k... anyway. ive been on this forum about a month (and also started my dreads a month ago). you can go to those other sites and stuff to learn how to better backcomb (thats what i did)... but dont use wax. i followed dreadheadhq and got screwed!!! im still getting the wax out. i had my girlfriend help me backcomb and they arent perfect in size even though i did about 1.5x1.5 inch boxes... they're very unique now and are getting their own personality and I LOVE IT!!! i love that i have a tiny one next to my ear and a HUGE ONE on the back of my head like a tail. its sweet. oh also... you should know that when you do backcomb they will fall out and redread themselves. at least that happened to me (well is currently happening) and other people on this site have told me about it too. good luck with the dreads man!!! post some pics even if its right after you backcomb. aaron ps. i hate american idol... but i got dreads and everyone called me jason castro so i checked out some pics online and his dreads are pretty sweet!!
hahaha yeaa there u go thats my point he started with exact 1.5 inch sqyares and ended up with some very thin some very thick..the process is wild and untamed and yes can be comntrolled somewhat but woith alotta effort., but ..the more wold and untamed u allow it to be the more enjoyable ot is when u have a headfull of mature dreads the 1 that stands out the most..has the most unique features..loops lumps balls or wharever is the 1 u love the most, not the unifoem ones that blend in to the rest its that great big flattened one or the ziggy zaggy one or like some ppl like boogabah and windcriesmary every single 1
man. everyone knows you have beautiful dreads from years of being natural and patient. but honestly, some people just arent looking for that. you can give your opinion of course, but repeating it three or four or five times or making pages of argument with someone really doesn't bring anything. don't force your own views on other people. it's an unfriendly thing to do. that's all I have to say to the matter. peace
