Beatniks. I mean they were the original marijuana smokers and they did it with such fucking class. I mean now n days a non-smoker will frown upon a smoker because they have this mis-conception that there lazy and slow. Nope, not in the 1950s, the beatniks were considered strange and different, because they were against the pressured-conservative control of the 1950s. They established ideas through powerful works of art, and literature. Sure the hippy 60's were great and all, but they lacked the actual creativity and point.

I wish I was alive then, I have no desire to ever travel to the 1960s but the late 40's beat culture would have been amazing. I got obsessed with Kerouac for a while after reading the majority of his writing for a paper, and I love morphine and I'm decent at bongos, so I'd fit right in. I was even close to getting a Burroughs themed tattoo, but never did. Haha, I'm glad now.

they weren't the original marijuana smokers, unless you mean after it became illegal.
the beats were a hell of a lot more interesting than the hippies, that's for sure.

Yeah, the Beats were a million times more interesting that hippies.

Good ol' Jack did have some nasty habits though. He'd often drink himself to passing out and pop them benzos like a mothafucka.

Yes, I love the Beat period.
It's really interesting to read about them and the time they lived in
Especially some of the people most of you already mentioned. Great writers of their time.

yeah I think one distinction between the beats and the hippies is the size of their numbers. The hippie movement only went awry because it became mainstream, became pop culture, which is notoriously shallow. In the early days of the haight-ashbury with fewer numbers it was much more genuine and sincere, and could be compared to the beats, after all the beats were their mentors. Eventually it got so big that everyone let extreme albeit rare occurrences define the fundamentals of their culture (like janis, jimi, and jim all dying, and the manson thing), without really thinking about the specifics and the improbabilites. A few radical situations and suddenly everyone applies it universally. It's lame that that pattern of pop culture had to effect the counter movement in such a way.

The hippies shouldn't have all flocked to San Fran, they should have stayed where they were and inspired those around them in their respective locales. Many did of course, and many still do. Maybe you can compare them to Israel; we tried to have them secure their own nation-state and there's been a lot of trouble in the area ever since, but the jews who are scattered seem to have all these positive effects on the gentiles around them in many areas: political, artistic, scientific, economic, etc.

I'm all high on oxys right now so my brain jizzed all over this thread hehe
